you get to collect unemployment regardless whether you were fired or laid off. depends on whether you can get your fat ass to fill out the necessary forms.
I don't think that's true actually.. I remember reading about people who couldn't collect unemployment because they did something really bad to the company or the company was sneaky and said they did something really bad in order to not have to pay out unemployment. Unemployment is funded by the companies, not so much by the government, well until recently..

Collecting after being fired is a MAYBE.

Being fired for cause may either stop collection of UI benefits, or postpone the collection of benefits. Every state is a bit different in this.

I was once fired back when I was 19.

I was working at a Jiffy Lube and after improperly tuning a customer's car (she had already left), I was given a stern reprimand.

Turns out, the poor lady got in a serious accident later that day, totaled her car and another--she and the passengers in the other car were hospitalized but luckily, no one died. They eventually sued Jiffy Lube, so well...it was a no-brainer. I had already been fired, though--day after the accident.

needless to say, I still feel horrible about it.

Funny you should ask.

Well, after following some advice I read on the internet, I thought that I would help out our customer by improving her fuel economy.

I inflated her tires to sidewall pressure. (I was trying to help, mind you).

Turns out, that was not such a good idea.

:(

I never been fired but I seen a couple thousand people downsized/fired over my 10 years. This last one was a big one because we bought out a very large bank and doubled in size. Upper management look at each side and determined which side of the house was better and the other side got let go, I'm still safe!

Amazingly, I have yet to be fired from a job. Was laid off once when the company I was working for ceased to exist, but that's it so far.

never been fired, but I forgot to turn on the cooling for the toppings at a pizza place for 7 hours. Any food made on premises goes thru a 500+ degree oven so I was was less worried about food poisoning than on customers sending back food. Afaik no one got sick and sued the store while I was there.

I was fired from the bar I worked at for keeping some personal beers cold in the bar fridge. Strange thing was we were allowed to drink all we wanted from the bar's stock. Not sure why I felt the need to bring my own beer inside. Must have been because I was so stoned.

:hmm:

I think your final sentence belongs somewhere in the first sentence.

I've seen it happen, but never to me.

generally it seems like it occurs when either: a) it affects a large client and they demand it, or b) they were looking to get rid of the person anyways and needed an excuse to avoid having to pay unemployment benefits.

Never been fired myself. Witnessed three "fvck up" firings though.

1. Sr Compensation Manager downloaded the employee database and then checked his computer into his luggage (in the presence of his equally-retarded director, who said nothing). Computer was stolen, sr manager was fired and 90,000 employees and former employees got free credit watch for a year.

2 & 3. Comp Director sent out the exec compensation package for all execs... to EVERY exec. The actual send was done by a comp analyst but through the director's account, so they both wound up getting canned.

I was fired once because the company moved me to a position I absolutely hated (from software development to telephone customer support), and I bitched about it weekly until they found my replacement and canned me. I hated the place anyway and ended up much better off. Two other times the company I worked for shut down but I avoided being unemployed - the first time I found another job 3 weeks before they shut down and the second time we were bought out but we (smaller company) ended up taking over the bigger company.

A bud of mine got fired when (after he was installing an aftermarket amp) he was pulling a customers truck out of the building and accidentally hit the huge mirrors on it with the bay door. Turns out the mirror is one of the really expensive ones with turn signal lights, heaters, etc.

I guess it is a "firable offense" or some bullshit...honestly the manager was out to get him for months, even though he was a good worker. Honest mistake, the company is large enough to pick it up to keep a good employee, imo.

Wasn't like he was out joyriding a ferrari :\

Never been fired, but I did have a boss once ask me if I had forgotten about gravity.

Big dies make loud noises when you're flipping them over and the chain hooks fall out of the eyebolts.

I got fired for running from the cops through the pizza place I was working at. I guess they found the bowl I tossed under the freezer the next day.
