Even More 6600 GT Discussion

Hey all

Yet again, I am waffling back and forth between the 6600 GT and the 6800. Keep in mind:

1) I am in college (means i am po)
2) $50 is enough to talk me into just about anything

Therefore, you can see how hard of a time I am having deciding between a 6800 and a 6600 GT. I looked at a good benchmark comparing the two, and it looks like the 6800 generally rides about 10-20% faster than the 6600. Thats pretty good, but I've been trying to decide if its truly worth the price...especially since 6600GT's are bound to drop to below $200 realtively soon. (I plan on buying one or the other in mid or late January). I'll basically be paying $2.50 -$3 per extra fps.

My target is to run current games at 1024 or 1280 with 2x or 4x AA, with reasonably high detail, and the 6600GT seems to do just fine there. But what about in a 1-2 years? Assuming I want a card that will last me for a while, looking forward into Unreal 3, etc, etc, will I be kicking my ass for not getting a 6800? The success rates for softmodding a standard 6800 are not that encouraging, and if the 6600GT seems to be an 80% replica of the 6800 as far as scaling goes.

Will that trend disappear in the future do to the 128 bit memory bus? Basically I'm buying the last video card I'm ever going to put in my computer before I just build a new one, and by then, I'll be a senior in college and gaming probably won't be as high on my list, esp. with a Mechanical Engineering major. If I can expect the 6600GT to follow a normal trend of scaling down as games get better, and not pull a "5900" on me (i was shocked with the way the NV30's sucked at modern games), then I can deal with 50 rather than 65 fps.

Yeah I saw that CompUSA thing...the only thing is I believe it's a PNY, and if you read my post I'm not in the market for this card until January. I don't want to deal with any bullsh*t from PNY...I've heard bad things about the quality of the analog output.

But so far, that's two votes for 6800.

Doesn't the 6800 have isssues with DVD playback? I thought I heard that.

JFK was killed by three black and green aliens from the planet Uhalide because he was trying to sell a fried egg recipe to their ultimate rivals, the planet Icgntms. That's just something I heard somewhere.

Ok..after looking at benchmarks, the Anandtech HL2 and 6600GT OC'ing roundup, I really can't see any good enough reason to go to the 6800, unless it comes down to around $230. For the gaming I do, 1280 at 2x AA and 4x AF is more than enough. Raving reviews on PriceGrabber, every review site saying good things...this card kicks ass. If I can thrash my roomates 9800 Pro, that's when I know it's good 😉

Plus the XFX card looks sick.

Sounds like you convinced yourself. However, I don't know why your asking this question now instead of when your ready to buy. Prices of today will not reflect prices in mid January.

I'm asking the question because the cards will still be in existence in January, and the 6600GT will still be cheaper. My main question regarded the future potential for the 6600GT, specifically whether or not it will take a horrible performance dive in the future, the way the 5x00 series of NV cards did.

F*ck me! New week means new PriceGrabber updates...a Jaton 6800 for $250. Give it a month and it'll be in my comp. March of technology...woo hoo.

Anyone had luck softmodding the Jaton?

Are there any powersupply considerations when buying a 6600GT vs 6800?

I currently have a 350w Antec, would I need to upgrade my powersupply if get a 6600GT or 6800?

From what I read you should be fine. I'm trusting my Dell 345W to drive the 66 or 6800, and I've read of more than a few Dell owners having no problems.
