They sell them for $99.99-$50 COSTCO MIR. COSTCO is pretty good about their rebates and I think the drive can be upgraded to 48x16x48. Oh yes and the package includes 10 genuine TDK 40x CDRs as well as a video for the installation

Yo

Edit: baseprice dropped to $69.99 - $50 MIR valid through 10/31/02. They are harder to find though since now the 48X16X48s are supplanting them ($99.99-$20MIR)

Not all TDK 40X's are LiteOns. Liteon's are the only ones that can be flashed to 48X. For those without a Costco membership, Dells reg price on this drive is 95 with a 40 rebate and free shipping. Net 55 for the drive AR. It's around the same or cheaper than Costco because there will be tax on the 100 at Costco.

Hotted than fresh monkey brains????. No thanks, too many Prions, yuck.....:Q

The units have the blue tray - I like it, it looks great with the blue leds on my Lian-Li case.

The unit I got is a retail packed unit, labled by TDK and manufactured in April 2002. Not sure if it is upgradable, but I don't really care since anything beyond 24x is max only, and will be perceived only if you write a full disk (outside disk speed).

I still think this is pretty hot, since as a retail unit it also contains 10 bonus +2 regular CDRs (TDK :)) 1 CDRW, and a great software package including NERO 5.5 (usually $49.99 alone) and a CD Marker.

It's not a Dell rebate - it's a COSTCO MIR. Very simple too, prints out with the sales receipt. No UPC and no other BS - just fill out and send in the MIR.

The 24X models were Z-CLV and 40X are P-CAV, so you're dealing with 2 completely different types of burning there. Personally I've had a lot of problems with CD's burnt @ 24X on older drives which I've had to slow down to 16X to get them to read. I upgraded to 40X and flashed firmware to 48X. Burning full speed with no problems on new and old readers. Just my 2 cents.

is it really worth it to flash from 40x to 48x? it woudl shave maybe 5 seconds off a burn time. i dont know if i want to run the risk of screwing up the drive by flashing it

i think you would actually shave between 20-30 secs. it's up to you if it's worth it or not. i personally don't mind my 40x burn speeds....already fast enough.

Yes and it is in short supply (some stores are oos) because it was replaced by the 48x drive.

because u can get the cendyne from office max and get the same thing and also get a guaranteed upgrade to 48x....I have had 3 rebates with cendyne..and i have no problems...so getting the drive for 61 shipped is not at all a good deal..in my humble opinion...

also even if u dont get the rebate...this drive is still a better deal than the dell's...unless u made of money..

There are two different versions of the TDK 40x. One is made by Lite-On as you guys have noted, and one is made by Sanyo I believe. The difference is the Lite-On one has "Smart Burn" and "Buffer Underrun Protection" and is technically the 40x12x48B. The Sanyo has "BURNproof" (which is a Sanyo property) and is technically the 40x12x48X I believe.

Yes the Lite-On can be upgraded to 48x because it is technically a Lite-On LTR-40125s with TDK Firmware.

Personally I believe the Sanyo is a better drive if you can get it, as I have heard that it has the best Audio Extraction speed and output quality of any drive out there with the possible exception of the new Yamaha CRW-F1. I know for a fact (since I have the 40125s) that the Lite-On is only marginal with extracting audio.

Both drives are good, but I am going to check my newly-opened (I hope it is opened) Costco and see if they have the Sanyo.
