I recommend changing the coolant and thermostat, the V6 engine is known for bad headgaskets. As for the rest of the car, watch your trans fluid and change it when it's no longer bright red. The only other common problem on these engines is the front cover gaskets tend to leak coolant into the oilpan.
I was a Ford Mechanic when these car were new and several years after.
Good Luck, PM me if you would like more information.

So is the 4.6L V8. Its of a MAZDA design, Ford's 3.8L V6 is nothing compared to GM's, my Bonneville can burn that T Bird, but yet again the T bird does have a good ride and awsome feel of the wheel. Bonnevilles sucky seats and FWD just makes its horrible.
The 4.6l is NOT of Mazda design
I drive a RWD car too, I'll agree that they are fine in the winter. I was just warning him that it wasn't going to be like his old FWD car. There's usually a pretty good "feeling-out" period when switching from FWD to RWD, and it's amplified by the T-Bird having more power. Add snow or rain to that and it can get bad fast. I just wanted to warn him to get used to the car.Originally posted by: kd7fhd
nice car. you'll enjoy it.
I have 196,000 miles on my 85 (original miles... I bought it new). I have the 302 v8 with the auto overdrive tranny & the only major maintenance I've had to do is replace the timing chain - it broke when I was doing 75 mph on I-80 coming into Cheyenne.
Say what you want about rwd cars, but the old bird sure does good at 7200 ft asl in the wintertime.
