Evadman's Tip of the day for 12/07/2011

The letter 'L' is often silent in English words. This is true in most words where 'L' is preceded by 'A' or 'O', then followed by 'F', 'K', or 'M': calf walk calm folk half talk psalm yolk, salmon

The 'L' is generally not silent when the 'L' is preceded by a different vowel, such as 'U', 'E' or 'I': bulk elf elk elm milk sulk shelf

The L isn't silent in calf, walk, folk, half, talk, psalm, or yolk. And CERTAINLY not calm.

Salmon, yes. Okay maybe yolk.

calf = caf
walk = wok
folk = foke
half = haf
talk = tok
psalm = som
yolk = yoke

I have people pronounce all of those as they are shown on the right.
I don't... but I have heard them pronounced that way.

the "L" might not be as prominent as your other examples but there are "L" sounds in there just softer. Just say "walk", it is a soft "L" not a harsh "L" but it isn't gone entirely.

Proof, my dad is English? 😛

I have never heard them pronounced that way...save for yolk. Maybe walk and half sometimes. But never calm. Calm I have never ever heard anyone not pronounce the l quite distinctly.

Must be a regional thing or something. I rarely here people pronounce the Ls on any of those words.

I forgot how much fun these threads were from when I stopped them 7 years ago. Oh, how I have missed this.
