"With European ruling body UEFA planning to bring in new rules governing debt and ownership from 2012 which mean clubs cannot spend more than they earn, the pressure is on to find a safe financial footing."

"sea of debt said to be around $4.3 billion for the whole of the Premier League, according to the Wall Street Journal"

"If one major sponsorship or television deal collapses, the clubs will sink"

wow.. imagine if the NFL/NBA/Baseball as a whole goes bankrupt 😱

this is what happens when you pay these guys millions of dollars just for a transfer or on "loan".

They talked about the EPL mostly, and a little about Scotland and Germany. No mention of the Spanish and Italian leagues.

Frankly, the EPL clubs have had to spend a ton to overtake the level of competition that was historically found in Italy. Used to be, if you were the best, you went to play in Serie A. I'm not surprised, but I also don't think anyone will fold. Once the economy picks back up, they'll be raking it in again.

Of course, the Italians didn't help matters. Even after quotas were gone, Serie A clubs still favored domestic players over foreign. Many in Italy now think there are still too many foreigners in the domestic league, hindering development for the international squad. Winning the 2006 Cup quieted that crowd, but we'll see what happens in 2010.

A full 25% of that debt is Manchester United. And who saddled them with that debt? The Glazers, who are American, and own American sports franchises. And most of that debt was used to buy the club in the first place.

yea that kinda fucked that up

the Russians lite to do it as well

They do, NFL games are a small percentage action, massive percentage of advertising time.

the first time i went to an nfl game i was shocked at how much time was spent standing around waiting for commercials on tv. i had thought it was the other way around, with commercials airing while the teams were busy doing prep work and stuff. wrong! they looked as bored as i was.

Leveraged buyouts FTW?

I give the NBA 10 years before they go out of business. Viewership and attendance are down, ticket prices are up, the teams are losing money left and right and the style of play is boring.

i dunno...from what i understand the NBA is hugely popular in europe, china and parts of south america. their tv contracts from there must be substantial. altho, player salaries should come down some...a smaller salary cap would mean less shitty max contracts given to guys like zach randolph and andre iguodala.
