Europa Universalis IV, do you play it

I have played it, for people who dont know, its a grand strategy game where you can take the role of any country that existed from 1444 to 1821 and try to conquer places and run the country, its complicated at first but when you get basic stuff down its really fun

EU4 is fine but it is a bit non-specific in its focus, and too much "waiting" for me. I am looking forward to Hearts of Iron 4.

Haven't played it in awhile, but it's a great game. Pretty steep learning curve, really helps watching a playthrough first. Even after that, it takes awhile to get the hang of things. Took me about 8 games before remembering to up my maintenance before attacking or knowing how Trade works.

i played it for a while, at release, but it was buggy. jingoism getting waaay out of hand, nations on best terms since turn 1 suddenly declaring war, fleets disappearing..

i played mostly japan, 3 games, make that a month. third game i set myself to have china as an ally, no matter what. spent considerable resources on it, became a major power, lucked out on random rolls, and blitzed through the entire malesyan peninsula.

idk, i wanted to like it, but ..

Steam says 372 hours but I think it's a lot more than that if it doesn't count the many hours of offline steam I have played with it too.

my brother and i used to play it multi player a lot...

Quite Epic listening to my brother yell,

"BRO, now why did u have to start a sea war with Portugal... now your SOL... GG... "

I found it very shallow when it first came out. Just wasn't enough to do outside wartime. But, now after whats been like 10 expansions its really becoming very good.

I probably played over 3k hours between 2 and 3, and that's not counting time with some of their other games, mostly HOI 2 & 3, Victoria 2, and CK 2. However right when I bought EU 4 the expansion or patch that introduced colonial nations came out. That just killed my interest honestly. Yes I know I can mod them out, but I would guess there would be game balance issues that arise from doing that, especially now with all of the patches and expansions balanced with them in mind.

One of the things I loved to do most with the EU games was to build an empire with colonies all over, and I actually liked to manage them, build them up, and so on. The last thing I want to do is manage ai's. Allies are enough of a pain, going to war when they shouldn't, and just generally messing up my plans. I don't want to have to take care of a colonial ai.

I do believe I know why they have started going in this direction though, and I can see it in the way they are designing HOI 4. It seems as though Paradox is leaning toward designing these games for multiplayer. Now if some people like that, ok, but I play these types of games exclusively as single player.

I guess I'll ask - has anyone played without colonial nations on in EU 4, and if so how did it go?

Main thing I don't like about those series is that if you were not aware of requirements for the special events you could screw yourself by not meeting or triggering at the wrong time.

I played it like 200 hours when it first came out...but I haven't played it at all since all the expansions hit (like 5). Kind of afraid to step back into it since I feel like I have to relearn it. sigh.

A friend had me buy it and we tried to play together but it's soooo complex...we never got really far an di haven't played it single player.

Maybe in multiplayer, but I've played the game for over 700 hours and I just go with the flow, whatever happens, happens. I don't know any requirements for any event except what I can see in the Decisions list.

This game is so damn addicting, anyone else still play it? Once i figured it out i can't go back to Civ
