I probably played over 3k hours between 2 and 3, and that's not counting time with some of their other games, mostly HOI 2 & 3, Victoria 2, and CK 2. However right when I bought EU 4 the expansion or patch that introduced colonial nations came out. That just killed my interest honestly. Yes I know I can mod them out, but I would guess there would be game balance issues that arise from doing that, especially now with all of the patches and expansions balanced with them in mind.
One of the things I loved to do most with the EU games was to build an empire with colonies all over, and I actually liked to manage them, build them up, and so on. The last thing I want to do is manage ai's. Allies are enough of a pain, going to war when they shouldn't, and just generally messing up my plans. I don't want to have to take care of a colonial ai.
I do believe I know why they have started going in this direction though, and I can see it in the way they are designing HOI 4. It seems as though Paradox is leaning toward designing these games for multiplayer. Now if some people like that, ok, but I play these types of games exclusively as single player.
I guess I'll ask - has anyone played without colonial nations on in EU 4, and if so how did it go?
