LMAO. Too much? Are you kidding me you gave that guy the value of a lifetime. I would have charged significantly more. Your time and expertise are worth more than such a paltry sum. Stop selling youself short and charge this moron for all the time you've put into supporting him on a weekly basis.

You could charge $100 USD for a full restore and backup of files let alone all the effort you've put into this. Make some $$. :D

Exactly. People here are dumb and looking at the wrong problem. They are saying too little. Are they suggesting he should have charged him $1k? 30 hours shows some really bad inefficiency.

The ones suggesting that are not professionals. We cap the rate at a certain point so don't make generalized statements.

I fixed a machine a couple weeks ago that was loaded with spyware/viruses/etc.
After an hour or so, I realized that it was going to take a very long time to rid her machine of this garbage and it would be quicker and cheaper for her, if I just backed up her files and reinstalled Windows.

I think if you read what I posted on earlier in the thread about charging "book rate" that he charged on the low end of the price range. 30 hours is a model of inefficiancy though. You can't charge someone $50 an hour actual time and then work 1/10 as fast as a competent tech. For a complete restore/OS reinstall. That's 2 hours billing reguardless how long it takes. Adding on other software (drivers etc) another 1-2 hours....so he's looking at billing for 3-4 hours of work and techs usually charge $30minimum $75 max.....
$90-300 at least that's what I'd see the range as....I would have charged that guy $105 if he bought the pc from me and $150 if he didn't but it wouldn't have taken me 30 hours either....

You should have charged way more than that.
Since he was a friend of the family its ok to give a bit of a discount.

Back the biatch up,blow everything away and reinstall. At this point in time I tell people flat out that they could buy a new computer for the amount of money it's going to cost em to have me deal with a
with a trojan/spyware infested rig if they aren't willing to format and do a reinstall.

99.9% of the time end users, don't have their valuable data backed up,if they have anti-virus the program hasn't been run/updated in months. Why in hell should I care more about their data than they do?

I charge around $35-$40 per hour for good friends and needed business contacts/referrals. I don't include time the computer is just sitting there (45 minutes copying files, 2 hours running scans, etc) but if I'm in front of it working on it then it counts. Even for a family friend and with heavy discounts you charged him about a 1/3 of what you should have (if it was personal) and 1/5 of what you should have (if it was a business computer he that he's going to take off his taxes anyway).
