The European Commission is considering a proposal that would implement new guarantees on game software. Essentially, they are looking at taking existing laws governing products in the EU and expanding them to cover games as well. What it would offer gamers is a two-year return window for games that failed to deliver, with retailers obliged to provide a full refund on any bug-ridden game. Unsurprisingly, this has developers concerned, with claims that forcing them to produce ?near-perfect? code would stifle innovation and set the market back, as opposed to making it better.

Thats awesome. Beat a game and then find one bug and demand a full refund. Highly doubt it will pass though, although it is Europe.
 
I'm all for glitch free games, but I don't think this is the way to go about it. Developers will just get lazy and remove a feature entirely rather than spend their time getting it done right.
 
terrible terrible idea. digital information doesn't 'go bad' like traditional physicaly products. with software, caveat emptor. im all for trial periods, and for returning if something does not live up to its promises or expectations. 2 years is way way too long
 
meh, when politicians mess with tech. when the internet is a series of tubes your game needs a mandatory warranty.
 
I don't see this being a good idea. What does "bug-ridden" mean, I mean how is a game defined as "bug-ridden"? People call Battlefield 2 a buggy game, and I've referred to it myself as Bugglefield 2 for the lulz, but I wouldn't demand a refund nor even think of it cause it's fuckin awesome. Otherwise, I agree with everything HardcoreRobot said.
 
I guess all game makers will go back to making pong since they don't want to incorporate any bugs into their product!
 
I want less buggy games but in no way will this law help.
They'll just cut back on PC gaming entirely (except for maybe flash web games) and focus on consoles. They will also do less with the consoles.
This is a bad move. There is no such thing as completely bug-free software. Even DOS has a few issues.

If anything they'd just stop selling their games to European distributors. They know Europeans would just import the games from retailers who aren't subject to the EU's stupid laws.

If by 'awesome' you mean encouraging the dishonest to exploit game companies I think you're correct.

That's a ridiculous law. Hopefully it fails.
 
Maybe a 3 day would suffice.. but you would have to prove that you
A) Didn't make a copy
B) Didn't actually enjoy the game

How do you prove that it's bug ridden? Maybe your video driver is bug ridden? Maybe part of your direct X install got virused/corrupted..?

So then.. you would also have to prove
C) Your computer meets the minimum requirements and that it's properly maintained.
 
eu is a joke, it gets more undemocratic every day. countries now have the majority of their laws imposed on them by unaccountable bureaucrats in Brussels.

its amazing how far they've let that go.
