"etiquette" for eating oranges/tangerines

After eating my "brunch" with parents they brought out some tangerines, each of which had seeds in them. My way of eating preferred not to spit or let the seed(s) drop out of my mouth, so I took the messy route and picked them out manually with my fingers. Another way was to just bite off the top part of the orange and then spit out the seeds.

My parents insisted that the way to eat them was to put the whole fruit in the mouth, get the seeds out without using your hands, and then spitting them out. While there's certainly no one way to eat seeded fruit like that, I say that there's more 'elegant' ways of consuming than spitting. How do you eat oranges/tangerines?

Bonus points if you cite/link to a well respected guide or website 😉

I usually just hold the seed in my lips and grasp it with my fingertips, and then drop it into a napkin. You're expected to use your hands when eating fruit like that.

same here

I always figured that it was more "proper" to spit the seeds out. Is it really polite to take something out of your mouth with your fingers, and then immediately shake someone's hand afterwards?!?

I didn't even know oranges had seeds. I'd just eat them anyway. I eat the cores of apples and pears even.

Bring the seeds to your lips and then with your index finger flick the seeds across the room when no is looking.

Buy seedless, or spit them out. Spitting a clean seed seems more "elegant" than grubbing around inside your mouth with your fingers, getting bits of fruit on them, and then letting the combined juice and saliva dry off and get caked on your fingers.

I like to double peel my oranges, taking the "skin" of the individial wedges off too, am I the only one that does that heh. So the seeds just kinda fall out.

Use the Fruit Knife to cut the two ends off, then cut the peel off in vertical strips. When the rind is loose, it can be pulled off using fingers. Tangerines are usually peeled this way. Seeds can be removed with the Fruit Knife.

I usually hold the slice in my fingers, bite out the seeds, and then put them on my plate with my fingers. But really, I don't think anyone, anywhere, cares.

if i was rich besides doing two chicks at one time. i'd get my oranges double peeled and grapes peeled as well :lips:

It is acceptable to pass the seed to a napkin and then place it on a plate. You can do the same with cherries.

Some fancier places that serve seeded fruits will have a "pit bowl" provided for you, as well as a finger wash bowl. You won't see that too often anymore though.

I just buy satsuma(sp?) instead.

Sasutmas have seeds too.

I eat Satsumas by the boxful around this time of year and I have yet to find a hard seed in them. Maybe the seeds are soft/small and unnoticeable?

Besides, they are insanely easier to eat than an orange. The peel comes off in few pieces, you break off a nice piece of satsuma without juices going everyfrickenwhere, and you plop it into your mouth.

it takes me hours to eat one banana cuz the seeds are so small.... dont get me started on strawberries!

I would imagine Miss Manners would have you taking the seeds out of your mouth with a fork or spoon.

I can't say I'm very driven to acquire this technique.
