ethics question, would you feel guilty?

say you won full scholorships to your college and other scholorships to pay for books so that you had no expenses and had a few scholorships left over for profit. well, would you feel guilty if you spent one that was given out to a few students in honour of a girl killed in a car accident a few years ago if it were spent on an audigy2 and NEC 2500a dvd-rw, even after college and books were paid for?

the scholorship was in the honour of a girl that died because of a drunk driver. it could be worse i guess, i could have used it for beer money

Nope. You won the money fair and square. It's yours to screw up, should you wish. Now, if you spend all that money on stuff and don't go to school, then you should be shot.

My scholarships always were worth more than tuition and books. What, am I supposed to send it back? 😀

the girl died because of a drunk driver, i coulda used it for beer money, so i guess computer parts are not all that bad

what about one for a black man (who's dead) who was the first to attend a catholic university? or a latino congresswoman who was killed for her beliefs about homosexuality? people have all sorts of reasons to start scholarships. if you win it, it's yours.

That would be rude.

Look at it this way, you could have spent the dead girl scholarship on school and one of the others on the computer parts. Don't look at each scholarship, but the funds as a total.

Nah, that's fine. You got what you were worth according to those who give those things out. They felt fit to award you the scholorships, but since it's a cash one and does not go directly to any specific thing, you can do with the money what you wish. No guilt.

Now, if you said you were going to spend that extra on beers and the club scene throughout the year, then we'd likely be calling you a heartless bastard. That, or commenting on the sense of irony there.

honour isn't proper..use in memoriam

Scholorships are meant to help students get through school, and aren't necesarily meant to be used for specific school stuff when they're given in cash.

I say you're ok as long as it's not beer. I spent my scholorship money on a mustang.

depending on how much money the scholarship was for, I'd feel guilty.

Scholarships, especially large ones, are meant to help people get through school. If you're going to blow a multi-thousand dollar scholarship on computer equipment, think about how the money could have helped someone else to get through school.

On the other hand, if it's just a few hundred dollars, I wouldn't feel guilty. Junior year of college, I won a $250 creative writing scholarship. What with tuition and room/board being almost $30,000, that $250 wasn't going to make a dent in anyone's school budget. I decided to use the money to honor my favorite writers by taking my friends out for a night on the town (re: dinner and drinking).

I would review the terms of the scholarship. If it specifically states that the funds may only be used for direct school expenses (i.e. tuition, room and board, books), then yes, I would feel guilty and not do it. If the terms only mention "general living expenses" then I guess it would be okay. Students have to blow steam off too!

Despite being a goody-two-shoes, no. Any kind of merit scholarship is yours to do with as you see fit. People awarding scholarships do realize that you can't devote every waking moment and every penny you acquire to classes and textbooks.

I can't believe this. Yes I would feel guilty. You are wasting money that could seriously help someone else. This world sometimes sickens me with how selfish people can be. I mean your wasting money that could go to someone?s education on computer equipment that will be worthless in less than one year. I hope you can sleep well at night knowing your high quality sound card is denying someone potential money to spend on books. And frankly, this scholarship was meant to give some sort of meaning to the senseless death of this girl, and what your using this money for does no honor to her memory. You sicken me.
