In June I bought a condominium in the same development I have been renting from. I moved from unit 4 to unit 15. A few months later someone moved in to unit 4.

This week I ordered an EEE pc 1000h from Mwave. It tracked as on truck for delivery yesterday. Usually the UPS truck is here between 4:30 and 5:00pm. I waited and waited until around 6pm. Finally I decided to check the tracking again, and it showed as delivered via "front door delivery" at 5:29pm.

I checked my paypal address - yep, it was right. I checked my e-bay address ... wait a minute, it still showed unit 4. Could the seller have shipped to my e-bay address instead of my paypal address?

I hoofed over to my old unit hoping to see the package on the doorstep there but instead I saw the tenant just getting out of her car. I said, "You live in unit 4 right?" She said, "Yeah." I said, "Well I moved from 4 to 15, and somoene accidentally shipped a package to my old address. Tracking shows me it was delivered today." She got a little red in the face and said, "Oh. My daughter won't be happy, she thought she had a new pc." She rushes in and I wait outside the door. A full 5 minutes later she shows back up, with the box ... opened. The inside box the EEE pc was in ... opened. She says, "Sorry about opening it. There was no name on it." Meanwhile I am looking right at my name on the address label.

But ... I'm a non-confrontational sort ... so I say thanks, and head back to my place. It was obvious to me that the whole thing had been taken out of the box but hastily stuffed back in when they realized I was there to claim it.

Twofold question to ATOT:

1) How would you handle it if a package arrived at your door addressed to a previous tenant?

2) How would you have handled the (lying) neighbor differently?

Cliffs:

* Ordered item
* Got shipped to neighbor by accident
* Neighbor opened package and played around with netbook
* Neighbor claims there was no name on the box when it is printed on the label in black and white

I don't keep stuff that doesn't belong to me, so I would have just returned it to the shipper.

I wouldn't have said anything to the neighbor. Nothing to be gained by calling her out for lying.

I probably wouldve flew off the handle actually.

And im not easy to piss off.

Who the hell would just keep it without trying to find the owner?

Especially OPENING the package within hours of recieving it...

Actually in just a bit over 1/2 hour (which I take as immediate). Package tracked at 5:29pm delivery. I was at the doorstep a little bit after 6pm.

If UPS (etc.) delivers something to me and I'm not expecting it I always check to see that it's for me. If it's not I just give it back to the UPS guy. I'm not going to keep someone's package.

Yep what if it is drugs and you open it and the cops bust in and kill your dog and arrest you and your mother in law... Naaa that would never happen over a package you never ordered. ;)

Never accept someone elses package. Let alone open it.

Anytime mail or packages have been delivered to me by mistake I have either taken them to the neighbor they were addressed to or returned them back to the deliverer. Nice example that woman is setting for her kid. :frown:

That's just so dumb. I don't know of any delivery company that doesn't put the name on the box. I think she was just hoping you had moved further away and wanted to keep it.

I've had this happen before. A relative had my old address and sent me something without even telling me. One day a guy found my dad via last name and in turn found me.

keywords here Francis and company...the 'daughter' recieved and opened the package. The mom just found out about it coming home.

The mom was probably just going off what the daughter said about no name on the package.

Quite a few people pull a scam with ebay by using the wrong address too. Makes it easy for them to get things when they want and harder for someone to track them down.

I get packages here all the time that only list my company name. For whatever reason they don't use all the address lines you fill out.

You usually are not dealing directly with any delivery company.

At least you got it back in one piece after just asking. They could have denied they recieved that package, and it would have taken a lot longer to get back your computer. Moral of the story: ship to the right address next time ;)

Nope. It was sent UPS.

It's only if it was using the postal service that that applies.

There's a saying:
10% of the population will never steal a thing.
10% of the population will steal anything that isn't bolted down.
