Ethernet wired home/electronics ...

Hello,

watched TechTV yesterday, as some guy was saying that they could do instead of those bulky cables for guitars, just one ethernet cable , and can connect them to a hub and such ... just like a computer ... and he said, that soon they would be able to do it with all electronics ...

so ... I was just thinking about this ... and thought that this was way too cool ... b/c you can like get a stereo , connect the unit to hub, speakers to hub , then get a tv and connect it to a hub ...

then via computer u can let's say link stereo output to it speakers and tv's output to stereo's speakers ...

well ... u could all kinds of the funky stuff ... and won't have to mess with a lot of cables : ))

what do u think about it ?

the only problem I can see is all the converting could possibly degrade the signals

Signal degradation due to converting isn't really an issue with digital sources like PCM, Dolby Digital, or DTS. It could very well cause problems with analog signals though.

Electrical degradation due to resistance on the wires would be alleviated by hubs and switches of course.

mitsubishi has a firewire tv now!

</A>i think firewire will take over for home theater control
then the home theater will be connected to the network with ethernet or wireless

but something need to be done about the 6 miles of wire behind my stereo

How awesome would a completely wireless system be? Using a high bandwidth protocol like 802.11a to transfer the signals, and have a complete 5.1 or 6.1 setup with no wires. I'd definitely buy into that if there was little to no loss in quality / latency.
