I am planning to get xbox live soon and was wondering if there was some
kind of adapter that would convert a ethernet signal to a usb signal. I have a linksys
Wireless-B USB adapter and a existing home network. I dont use the usb adapter anymore, so i was wondering if there was a device that could convert the signal. The alternative is quite expensive, a 100 dollar wireless g adapter

Normal USB needs a computer on one side. So there are cheap USB (computer) to Ethernet devices.

If you need Ethernet to USB that is not on a computer Mobo, you would have to find a special device that emulate the Mobo functions of USB. Such adaptors are usually device specific and cost much more than a Network Game Box wired or wireless adapter.

Yes, theres USB ethernet adapters as well as the wireless ones.

Why would you need to buy a wireless G when you have the wireless B allready?
 
Well the wireless B adapter is a USB one, the xbox only has a ethernet port. if there are usb ethernet adapters out there..could anyone point me to a website where i can buy one of these things?

If you are looking for an Adapter that you can plug to your X-Box Ethernet output, and will have USB on the other side so you can plug your Wireless USB Client.

Adapter like this does Not Exist :shocked:

Yes, a wireless bridge would solve my problem, but then i might as well get the xbox wireless adapter
cuz the bridges are like 100-250 bucks.

however if you indeed are trying to hook your wireless wifi to your xbox using the ethernet cable, you will quickly find 2 unpowered and driverless network devices.

ummm.. can u clarify with the last part plz? i dont get wat u mean with unpowered and driverless network devices. The xbox in fact designed for use with an ethernet cable, the wireless adapter came out later.

I found a whole ton of adapters that convert a usb signal to ethernet. Will any of these adapters
also go the other way around?(ethernet to usb)? if they do then i can save around 70$ 🙂
 
USB ethernet devices must be plugged into another computer device, you cant just plug it into another usb device. The usb ethernet device is powered by the usb connection.
 
Hmm... now I thought I've seen one of those device where you have a USB female and a short ethernet cable at the other end - but then it might have been my imagination!

Anyway... just do what I did although I had a USB Adapter (Linksys WUSB11)

I bought a Linksys Wireless-B Game Adapter WGA11B from my local Radio Shack for just less than $80.


Otherwise... this might be one of my dumbest idea ever. Listen and read on...

Get one of this: USB TYPE A Female to TYPE A Female Adapter = $10 plus S&H
And this... Linksys USB200M = About $30 max (pricewatch search)

Use your existing USB Adapter ---> USB Type A Female to Type A Female Adapter ---> USB200M ---> Ethernet cable between USB200M to XBox.

LOL... okay that's dumb. (Damn... why didn't I think of this idea earlier? Then again, I can't guarantee it'll work.)



Your choice:

$40 for the dumb idea not including cost of ethernet cable
$80 for the Wireless-B Game Adapter



 
Thanks for the info. I also have the exact same wireless adapter (WUSB11) that used to be paired up with a Linksys BEFW11S4

i don't think i really want to go thru to buying those two other items 😛 plus the ethernet cable

i dug around and found the Wireless B Gaming Adapter you were talking about. It's going for around $50(With $10 rebate)

Has anyone bought the particular product...is it reliable. The xbox wireless adapter($100) is designed to work only with xbox live. but the linksys one is designed to work with ps2, gamecube, and xbox. Would this present any kind of trouble when I go to set it up for xbox live playbility?
 
The game adapter works well not just gaming consoles but I also use it as my internet adapter for my notebook - email, browsing, etc.

I didn't have difficulty setting up the adapter since it's plug 'n play. Setting up XBox wasn't difficult as well. I've been using the adapter 3 months now... and it's been less than a month for XBox.
 
one more thing, do you have WEP encryption enabled? Seems a lot of reviews have been saying that the adapter does not work to well with WEP. I happen to have a 128-bit WEP network. Would this pose any problems?

Also would this this linksys bridge work?

On my xbox if i go into the xbox live menu, and select advanced then select wireless, would the xbox only detect the official microsoft adapter? Or would it detect also the Wireless Ethernet Bridge.
 
I've got WEP disabled.

I did bought the bridge you mentioned, WET11 - but I never tried it on the XBox as that time Halo2 didn't come out. I returned the WET11 and bought the game adapter instead.

I usually buy my hardwares from Fry's Electronics because of its no-question ask return policy. I have a history of returning things even if I liked it. If Fry's is near where you live - just try the WET11 on your XBox... if that doesn't work... return and get the game adapter.

I also would suggest chatting with Linksys Support - I'm sure they'll answer your needs... or maybe someone in AT would help.
