Just want to say first, Anandtech is my favorite hardware news and review website! I may be a forum n00b but I have been reading stuff here for a LONG time. You guys always sound knowlegable and informative. Also, I posted this in hardware before I saw this forum

Well, the problem first: Windows XP (CD is WinXP with Service Pack 1a) won't connect to the internet after a fresh install. I think the ethernet port is dead.. (I own a Shuttle SN41G2V2... Its a SFF)

The Story: I had been doing some work on my computer case, and stupidly kept turning it on and off. So, Windows decided to crap out on me. LUCKILY, my files were still on the disk. I tried to connect my computer to another computer via crossover cable (done successfully before) to copy my files, but for some reason I couldn't get them to connect. Assuming that it was a problem with the repaired copy of Windows, I bought a external USB HDD and saved my files. I did a complete reformat of the disk (not quick), and installed Windows.

This is where the problem started... I tried to connect to the internet to run Windows Update. If I remembered correctly from my last re-install, I didn't need to run a setup utility because it was plugged into a router (plug and play). This didn't work, and I realized that I hadn't installed the chipset (nForce 2 IGP) drivers yet. So I did that, and it still wouldn't connect. (see error link below)

Getting more and more irritated, I decided to unplug my DSL modem and hook it up to the computer. I ran the setup for my DSL service (It has always worked in the past), and tried to connect, but it still didn't work. At this time I said, what the hell, lets try wireless. I connected the router and modem again, installed the wireless drivers, and connected! I got to windows update, downloaded 1 thing, and restarted.

However, due to the crappiness of my wireless card and software (Shuttle's PN15(?) Wireless G adapter) it didn't detect the wireless card on the startup. I didn't want to mess with card anymore, so I just booted from my XP cd, deleted the old partition, ran a full reformat (I know quick would probably work) and reinstalled. Again, no internet via cable. I didn't try the wireless.

To end this story, I think my enternet port went out. Is there any way to test it? I figured Windows is probably sucking because it can't detect the Ethernet port, so It won't install the drivers for it. I kept getting this error from Windows: Windows Error 769

I have tried multiple ethernet cables.

ANY help, ideas, or anything is appreciated. I own a legal copy of windows XP, have the original disk, and the CD key that came with it. Windows has installed correctly in the past (twice, no failures other than this). I am sorry for any typos, or poor language. I am pretty stressed out right now. The motherboard (Shuttle SN41G2V2) and Hard Drive (Seagate Baracuda 120GB), as well as all other parts of the computer, are still under warranty.

Yeah, for $8.75 shipped for a new one I wouldn't worry about it too much. Have you tried to install new drivers? How about your bios? Is this an onboard card? If so I would make sure it is enabled in the bios and working properly there.
