sorry.

i got cable internet today. always had dial-up. the installer said that the ethernet port wasnt active. then he said it wasnt disabled just not there on the list to use. under system-hardware tab - device manager then i think he said it should be under network adapters and ethernet is not even there as an option.

its pretty fast like it is in the USB port but i was just worried that it could be faster through the ethernet port. sorry if i'm not making sense.

I would hook it up to ethernet instead of usb. It may be disabled in your bios. I would also purchase a router so you have a hardware firewall instead of hookedup straight to a modem.

i went into the BIOS and looked around but it had been so long since i been in there i couldnt find the right thing i guess. i'm going to have to study up on it again. might even get out the "book". can you tell me what tab to look under in there ?

also i have no idea what a router does. is it not ok just to use it like it is. i have the firewall that is in Micorsoft and Norton. how much would a router cost ?

Wireless Cable/DSL Router, it is a device (size of a book) that connects between the Internet's Modem and the networked computers.

This device Routes (direct) the Internet to the appropriate computer.

You can plug in 4 computers with cable, and many computers can connect wirelessly to the Internet and between them self (Network Sharing).

The system would be connected like this, http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg

More about Routers here, http://www.ezlan.net/routers1.html

What to buy? See here, http://www.ezlan.net/buffalo.html

Depending on how your ISP authenticates read this too, http://www.ezlan.net/broadband.html

Throw away any USB cables that come with a broadband modem. Use the Ethernet port. And don't try to use both USB and Ethernet at the same time.

that is what i thought. i will try and find it in the BIOS tongith and see if i can make it work. it is working fine to me though. this is warp speed compared to dial-up. which i used for 11 years. sad, very sad.

it'll probably be two weeks before i can order a router.

can someone tell me step by step how to find my ethernet port. was the above info correct about under device manager and it whould be listed ?

Since you did not post the exact model number of your ECS Motherboard (all we know is it's an AM2 socket)
we can not tell you exactly which LAN Interface Driver you need .. please see this link:

http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSi...MenuID=75&LanID=9&ln=1

When you get there, select the proper motherboard model based on what you bought.
You are looking for the correct LAN Driver for your motherboard / chipset .. It also helps to know
if you are using XP or Vista and if it is 32 or 64 bit as there are different drivers for each.

OK you got the driver and installed it. Now go into device manager and check to be sure
under Network Connections that you do not have any Yellow ? marks ... if you do not the
driver is installed ok .. Now do you see the Network Icon in the System Tray (2 little boxes
one over the other) ? ? ? If you do Right Click on it and Select Enable .. Then click on
Status, Properties, Then on Internet Properties TCP/IP, Then Properties ... be sure both
Obtain An IP Automatically and Obtain DNS Automatically ... that should work

Whenever you switch from USB to Ethernet( or the other way around) or Put a new device on the Ethernet port of your cable modem(either a New PC or a router), you need to power cycle the modem. You dont have to leave it overnight, but about 30seconds to a min is usually good enough.

On a side note, make you get a firewall/router and put that in between the cable modem and your PC. Otherwise you'll be hacked into in a few days.

UPDATE : my wife goes to get ont his morning and it wont connect so we call tech support. they send someone out. he tells us that the number we have is 34 and 38 and it needs to be between 40-50. he said we have to much signal strength. so he installs a splitter and gets it to 42. so its good now. anyone want to enlighten me on this ???

so i was on phone with wife when guy is there and asked him about if i need a router. he flat out says if i have one PC i dont need a router. so i tell him my internet friends say i need a hardware firewall i.e. a router. he just says i dont need one. i'm not doubting anything anyone on here says cause i know what is said on here is real world knowledge of what works. i was putting my modem on standby when i turned my PC off. i always turn it off when not using it. and the tech Guy said to just leave the modem on all the time.

any suggestions ?

I'd leave it on all the time and get a router. I cringe when people don't have a router hooked up.
