ETHERNET OR MODEM?

I've got one phone line and my roommate is already using it for DSL. Now I don't want to pay $170 for a wireless router, AND I want to connect to the internet. If I got a modem, could I use something like DirectTV or the like and bypass using the phone line to connect to the internet? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of either connection.

I'm kinda confused by the DirectTv thing, but you could get a router for less than $170 I'm pretty sure that uses Cat5. (wireless is more expensive, slower too, has poor latency, and new standards are coming out a lot) A router would be way better than a modem.
