Ethernet network problem - fixed!

I just rewired my LAN, which is two Win2000 machines on a Linksys 704p router on ADSL. It was working fine before, but I switched the phone line to the ADSL modem, and both Cat5 cables from the router to the machines. Both computers are seeing the Internet OK but neither machine can see the other, whereas they were before I rewired things. Could this be a bad Cat5 cable? I thought before I went switching cables I'd ask here. Thanks for any help.

It's not a bad cable, or they'd have an issue seeing the Internet, it's the same cable. 🙂

Are you sure you didn't change some TCP/IP settings? One place to check is in the Advanced Properties, you need to enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP. Also, you might try installing the NETBEUI protocol, since it's very easy.

Yeah, thanks for the ideas. I switched out the cables, same problem. I checked out my firewall again and somehow Zonealarm had forgotten a setting! I reset the other machine into my trusted zone and things are OK again. Finally, I have my Cat5 off the floor! Now to route my antenna cables... 🙂
