Hello all :) I just joined this board.. I've been searching all over the web for help with this problem. Its driving me Insane!

During christmas i got a new comp setup, I peiced together myself

Asus A7n8x-e Deluxe mobo
AMD ATHLON XP 2800+
kingston valuram pc2700 33mhz 512mb
zalman 400w p/s
two hdds, 120 and 80gig
windows xp professional SP1 ( and just recently SP2 )

Drivers and bios as came with the CD in the motherboard

After one reboot, my ethernet has pooped out on me. I am positive it is not a router issue, as i have tried the system at 3 different locations acrossed town.

It fails to renew or gain an IP, and my network connections say limited connection/no connection.
I've reformatted multiple times, no luck.

I've updated to brand new drivers, no. luck.

I've done connection wizard, directly to modem, checking the BIOS for disabled lan ( there are 2 LANs on the motherboard, AND i've tried 2 different PCI NIC cards.. SIGH! )

Im really going crazy trying ot fix this. Any help would be excellent, as I just got HL2 and.. Well, sucks becuase i cant install it on the system ): and my other 3 comps arent up to par for it.

Thank you in advance. Its been nearly a month of struggling with this!

Hi tyrannica Welcome to the forums

Just trying to stir it up a little here... have you tried upgrading the BIOS yet? I doubt that is the issue but you never know. Your system is pretty much the same as my own, I have the A7N8X (plain - no dual LAN) as well as an Athlon XP 2700+.

You said after 1 reboot... did it actually work and then crap out, or it never worked? The fact that you have tried 2 PCI cards and still no luck leads me to think that it is a software issue and not a hardware issue... do you have another computer or laptop to try the internet connection out on? Have you attempted to contact Asus regarding the issue?

You said you tried multiple locations, but did you try different ethernet cables?

Have you heard of knoppix? It is a linux based OS on a CD that you can boot straight from CD. Just as a test I would boot it and see if knoppix is able to talk to the NICs and start the network.

I've tried asus. Ive been waiting on a callback, for uhm, 2 weeks. \:

I will try updating the bios this evening.. That was one of the last things on my list to do. just havent got around to it.

Try uninstalling tcp/ip completely from your computer.

in network connections, delete everything in there.
Go to add/remove progs, = windows setup
untick tcp/ip or internet protocols
apply.
restart.

in network connections, see what you have [may need to reboot first]

Ok I tried updating the BIOS to the latest version from the ASus web page, specifically under my motherboard, and no luck.

im still getting a choked connection that cant renew an ip off my router, though every other cmoputer in the house can, even off the same cabling.

What's the NIC's MAC addresses showing as, if you do ipconfig /all in a command-prompt box? It's the Physical Address line for each NIC.

Good question, can you ping localhost or the gateway? Is it possible the router is restricted by mac address and the new one needs to be added to the router?

Or maybe the board has simply lost the MAC addresses, was my thought. But if he's also tried PCI NICs, I guess that would rule that out. What I'm wondering now is if there's some warez or malware in the picture that we're not being told about... the other day I came across a guy whose roommate was having problems (computer sending huge amounts of data traffic to unknown places), and it eventually came out that his roommate was using (get this) warez'ed antivirus software :D HELLO, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE...

Yes, kinda throws me for a loop when he has tried a couple pci nics.
Have you bridged the connection somehow?

Your using Windows XP SP 2 right?

If you have a firewall installed (or XP SP2's firewall enabled) disable it. Then go to a command line (start run type cmd)

Type this in the black box.

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

and hit enter.

See if that works.
