ethernet driver problem with vista

so, i just installed re-installed vista on a computer i got from a friend,(q6600, 2gb ram, 9600gt). Anyway, everything seems to be working properly except that i can't get the internet working. the motherboard is an asus p5k and i got the drivers straight from the website. in the control panel everything seems to be fine... windows recognizes that the driver is installed and the ethernet controller is working properly. however, when i try to use IE,firefox etc; there is no internet connection... pages dont load...

however, in the bottom right corner it does say "connected to unknown LAN" , or something along those lines... and the ethernet cable behind the computer lights up indicating that there is a connection..... so i don't know what the problem could be.

Can you ping your router? Can you ping a website such as google?

Start>Run and type in "CMD" or just type it into the white box after you click the start orb.

once the black dialog box comes up do an ipconfig, wait for it to finish (a second maybe), the try "ping google.com"

post your results back here.

ok no, i can't ping websites from the command window.
i now realized when i booted it up, the network thing says "Access: Local Only", which i assume means that it cannot connect to the internet.

the ethernet cable is confirmed as working properly... (it works on my macbook)

anyone?
is it possible that some part of the motherboard could be busted?

Check and make sure the IP address and DHCP are set to automatically obtain and address when connected to a network. Make sure it is in the same workgroup as your network.
