Ethernet cat 5 problem

I have two lengths of ethernet pulled from a working install. I needed to splice them together with one of those crimp down boxes (ie strip one side of each length and punch them down into like a break out box) so that it'll be long enough.

It doesn't work. Why? There is continuity, resistance is a 2.x ohms and no shorts. The length is only about 100 (no where near the 295ft mark)

It lights up the lights on my hub and NIC, but the network refuses to work (tested by trying to log into my Sympatico HSE service)

Any help would be appreciated.

Splices are not allowed; it causes a massive impedence lump (resistance is measured with DC, not @ 100 Mbps frequencies). IT also blows the crosstalk spec.

Your best bet if you absolutely gotta splice is to either use a 110 block (still "lumpy") or crimp a connector on each side and use a CATEGORY-RATED barrel connector.

Continuity and polarity aren't enough, the path has to be signal worthy at the specified frequencies.

Good Luck

Scott

And workaround would be to wire RJ45 plugs on each ends of the cable and use a coupler to attach them together. You can pick couplers up almost anywhere, we sell them for about 45p each in the UK.
