I don't congratulate myself that much. Had I held on for another month, I could have made twice as much. But hey woulda coulda shoulda. For now I don't have to worry about the FUD, volatility, and possible encroaching regulation. The sad thing is that outside of crypto, it's kind of hard to find a "safe haven" investment that can produce any real returns. Money market? No. Bonds? Flat. CDs? Very flat. Stock market? Please.

Interesting but ultimately irrelevant. I think the story is new to a lot of people who weren't paying attention. I read a good bit about Bitfinex, Tether Ltd., and related nonsense last Nov/Dec and I never once noticed any stories about them being investigated for their practices.

Tether Ltd. dumping/being dumped by their auditor is bad enough. And they're still printing more. But hey if they really are backing all that USDT with USD then I guess it's okay. We just don't know. They sure are printing a lot of it.

Also I would like to see some hard(er) data on exactly what kind of liquidity exists in the crypto market. It's currently estimated to be around $22 billion, 2.2 (now 2.3) billion of which is backing USDT.
 
Using ethminer now. I really want to figure out a way to make it run as some kind of daemon though, I hate that it's interactive and spits out so much data. I can't possibly pipe that to a log without killing the SSD. May check out Claymore to see if it's better for that. I'd like to be able to monitor hash rate and stuff so I can get an alarm if something fails.

Claymore has all that functionality built in. Comb through the readme file to see all available features.

If you set up a RAMdisk, you could pipe output to a log file on that, but you'd have to trim the log file every now and then to avoid using up space.

Was thinking of doing that too. Though I'll probably check out Claymore first. This is my last shift then I'll be off for a few days, so I can build my new rig.
 
I recently converted a bit to CAD but kept some as eth. I did well since I sold at $1340/eth and now eth is at like $1166. Almost tempted to re-buy eth so I can sell it later again. I'm using Quadrigacx. https://www.quadrigacx.com/

I'm sitting on about $25 of mining profits so far, officially. ( I have more eth I could convert if I wanted to)

Not huge money but not bad for one GPU and fact that it's more or less something that you set and forget. Going to get my dedicated rig running when I'm off work, then I'll add the 2nd GPU. I'll ether sit tight and hope at some point the GPU shortage ends, or maybe check with local computer stores to see if they can put me on some kind of preorder list.

I think its not a good time to expand at this point. Various regulation news is hitting Bitcoin hard, and that's dragging down the overall market. The hope for increase will be based on positive development on Ethereum.

The difficulty is going into the stratosphere, and that's really starting to hurt profits. I hope it drops short term so more Ethereum can be mined, despite profits being lower. I am thinking of selling just 1-2 cards(right now running on 10 Polaris ones).

By the time GPU markets have stabilized, either the difficulty may be too high, or it may be way too close to PoS. It doesn't sound like PoS is too far off now. Surely end 2018/early 2019.

It's hard to predict the bottom but if I had some spare fiat, I would be dollar cost average buying this dip 100%. Should make gamers happy if this lasts a while as cards will go back to MSRP. 😀
 
I don’t know, things are different now compared to how they were in the past. I’m a bit skeptical about recovery, and I think it’s got a ways to fall yet.
 
I don't care about the adjustment. It was bound to happen. Too much digital gold rush from Bitcoin got everyone crazy. Hope you sold high and will buy back low. Also, I never though ETH was something that should hold high value like BTC. It's not finite. It's made to be used. I love how all the anti-cryptos are like we told you so, but the traditional markets are all off too. I would think that crypto would be the traditional market anti ie when they fall crypto goes up. Apparently human nature is too lock step.
 
I changed my ETH into BTC at about the best time I probably could have reasonably expected. I’ve always found the thought of trading to be stressful, so I just HODL.

If in 10 years BTC has mooned to 100k then I’ll be happy, if not I’ll be retiring from my current line of work and moving on to my next adventure and still be happy. I don’t care either way, it’s fun to watch; not in a schadenfreude kind of way though mind you.
 
A lot of crypto newbs have been feeding the whales. 5k ETH by 2019 is my prediction assuming the US economy and stock market stays strong.

I think it'll take longer.

Within this year, Eth HODLers will be fortunate if it gets back to $1400 it was just 2 months ago. The current meteoric rise have been possible because it was an unregulated wild wild west. The reason Ethereum was able to avoid dropping compared to other cryptos recently was because there was a positive development announced by the Ethereum Foundation. That's about a scaling solution called Sharding. But while progress is definite, its been coming in at a steady pace. Such announcements may only hold Ethereum from dropping further, rather than prompting another crazy rise.

The reason is because the trend towards cryptos have changed. It'll get rid of the underground, dark web style of people, it'll get rid of the absolutely newbie investors, it'll get rid of those that do it to avoid government intervention(like for paying taxes). That's likely a nontrivial amount of "investors" at the moment.

It won't go up at this rate forever. While its true investing is driven primarily by emotions, it can be argued some logical analysis does happen. When EF successfully scales Ethereum to be "visa-like" in amount of transactions it can handle, when EF successfully implements PoS, then it can start moving to a more mature phase where real world applications start to appear.

Then, maybe it can reach the point of ubiquity. Then $5K starts making sense. It may take a decade.
