Ethereum GPU mining?

Here are a couple of my results with vega and claymore... it's a powerhog.

Ethash - 33.7 MH/s
EthashDecr80 - (33.33 MH/s, 2.67GH/s) - @ 240-280 watts on kilowatt (with cpu 320-360 watts total... cpu/mb/mem/ssd/win10 take about 80 watts) temp @73 with fan @80%

Ethash2gb -37.58 MH/s
Ethash2gbDecred85 - (34.64 MH/s, 2.94 GH/s)

That's nothing. My 1070's are pulling ~ .27 hash per watt WHILE dual mining and that's from the wall. Literally twice as efficient as Vega. Unless a bios mod and optimized driver/software extract a whole lot more I just don't see Vega as being remotely useful for mining and barely useful for gaming. I never thought AMD could one up Bulldozer but it looks like they have done just that with Vega.

1070's are the best for mining Ether. I wonder if that trend will continue (probably, not selling mine) when Ether mining dies for a while and we move to other algorithms. Barely useful for gaming is a bit hyperbolic though unless you think 1080'ish performance isn't adequate?

🙂 I could have worded that better. With current NIVIDA options there's not a compelling reason to go with Vega. Once Volta is released there will be zero reasons to purchase Vega without a 50% price cut on AMD's end and I doubt they have that much room to budge.

Anyway, as far as mining is concerned, looks like 1070s are still king. They will be the last cards I sell off.

No worries. Any ETA on Volta? I bet Nvidia is laughing their assess off right now, I don't expect them to launch anytime soon, no reason to really. They could just refresh their current cards (change the model numbers) and still be fine.

The Vega 56 could be a sleeper if the aftermarket cards allow for 350W+ TDP and flashable BIOS's. It's being artificially held back from the looks of it.

All that being said it shouldn't be too hard for Nvidia to respond with a small 1070/1080 price cut.

sheettzzz..😱. every other card i have is more efficient than this vega 64 currently.. except for that lonesome RX460 🙄 Hopefully driver improvements will help, but currently it's a hard sell.🙁

I'll give it a few weeks before i decide to whether it's worth it or not.
 
Apparently Vega is beastmode when it comes to mining XMR. Just point it at the right coin and away you go. It remains to be seen if XMR retains much value for very long, though.

Yeah that monitor has flaws and I already have the the same processor and motherboard. I'll get NewEgg to send me the game bundle (the games actually look decent this time).

That's the thing. With Ether looking like it'll become unprofitable soon, Vega could surprise us with other coins. AMD could also be sandbagging on drivers to not piss of gamers....yet.

That poor 460. Tell you what, maybe someday I'll send you my 270 that is doing absolutely nothing now that I don't mine ZEC anymore (NV miners made ZEC mining go to hell, grr). Put them in a box and they can keep each other company, or something.

ETH mining is probably not the main reason why I would get a GPU at this point. Would like to see what Vega can do with ZEC, though.

Say, does AMD sell Vega in packs that don't include mobo + CPU? All I could find on NewEgg were the CPU + mobo packs.

Best Buy's listing said the game vouchers would be in the box, but it wasn't like a line item added in my cart or anything. If it would have been a discount on any freesync monitor I may have splurged on an upgrade, but kinda want to wait and see the 4k/144hz HDR stuff that just got pushed back to next year (I know only Gsync versions have been announced so far).

I should have more results tomorrow on the rest of the algorithms. I had to redo everything i had this evening cause I was thermal throttled. I do know for sure is that Lbry doesn't hash under claymore's dual miner.

I'm running the algorithms off of NiceHash, MiningPoolHub, and Zpool.

Cool. Though I think it may take some time for mining software to catch up with the hardware changes.

edit: ugh found the monitor + Vega packs. That Samsung monitor isn't even their new one with Freesync 2, why AMD why?

those are with stock speeds. The only thing adjusted was the fan speed to keep the temp down to 70 under full load in this texas heat.. but doesn't it use about the same power as the R9 290? I have a crap load of dead 290 on my todo list.
 
Yeah looks like Vega needs some serious undervolting. Some people are getting a 80w+ undervolt while overclocking at the same time pretty easily apparently. Which is pretty standard for AMD GPUs.
 
All I will say is that the guy who was mining like mad using Vega FE apparently did his own custom XMR miner specifically for Vega. Most of the existing miners have cores written specifically for particular GPU architectures. Claymore's stuff is like that.

It's going to be awhile before we see any good mining software for Vega.
