ET broke my PC

I went to bed last night.
My pc was just chugging away at WUs.

This morning when I woke up my drive had unrepairable errors
and now I can not reboot WIN98.

I am able to get into DOS with a startup disk
but not into SAFE mode. Errors were detected on more than one partition.
I fear I'm going to have to do the dreaded re-install of win98 again.
Anyone have other ideas?

I have a feeling that my PC found proof of extra terrestial life and
UFOs came down and trashed my PC.

Is my PC safe behind this SMC Barricade router? Is there anything else I need to set up?

Have you done a complete scandisk with surface scan to see if there are any bad sectors with information in them, the scan may be able to move the info to another sector and you will be able to get you computer up and running again.

That's what I'm doing right now.
I'll let you know if I find any traces of extra terrestial activity.

You know what the 95 in Windows 95 means, don't you?

95 days between full reinstalls!

98 just gave you an extra 3 days. ;)

Marcoco,
bummer. Sounds like you may have a hard drive going bad on you. :(
Good luck with it.

I've got Win95b installs running for over a year with absolutely no problems. They are used by staff 5 days a week, and they are turned off at night which helps. It's about time that I start going around doing defrags and registry cleanups with Norton Utilities though. :)

Even though Chicago standardized on Win98 (bad move, they have lots of support issues), I've refused to install it. We either move to Win2K or not at all. And I recently got the go ahead to upgrade the 95 desktops to Win2KPro. :)

(heh, they even tried to install Win98 on the laptops when the salespersons were at a sales conference, without letting me know, and it wouldn't install, so they had to load Win2KPro. :D)

I have done exactly the same thing here. Win98 and networks are bad things. I have stuck with Win95 and weill be moving all of my staff computers to Win2K this summer. I was going to do it last summer, but I had to wait on some software that was able to run with Win2K. Can't upgrade during the school year, either, that would be a nightmare.

LOL! The entire network at my school/college is 98 clients and NT4 servers! :Q

The number of error and not working machines is unbelievable!

If i had it my way I'd get some new computers (range from Cyrix PR166 :Q to about 16 Duron 650's, average are K6-2 400s) and Win2k!

Alright, there definately is an alien in there.

I was able to get back up and scan the disk surface.
It found some bad clusters and backed out to an old version of the registry.

I was able to get Win98 back up, virus scanned, surface scanned & defragged the drives.
but then the system started to go loopy again. I could hear some clicking (ET)
inside my pc, and then got a "Disk Write Error".

I now opened my pc to see if I could identify what this clicking noise is,
but it seems to be running fine (hiding?). I'm scanning/defragging the other partitions
but I fear the fight is not over.

I've had this Maxtor drive for less than a year, so I hope it's not dying on me.

My dad's office network consists of a NT4 server and three win98 clients. The server runs 24/7 365 without any problems... I can't say the same for the win98 machines

, I get so many calls of either programs crashing, network not working, or all of the above! :disgust:

That definitely sounds like a dying harddrive!!! I'd suggest you back up all your data to CDRs ASAP! This sounds very similar to how my IBM 75GXP acted before it finally went to harddrive hell(ya know all rotten 75GXP drives are turned back from harddrive heaven:Disgust;).

So get any valuable data backed up!!!

First make a fresh backup of your datas as soon as possible !!!

If it's only bad sectors then, if you can, download the utility from Maxtor and low format your hard drive. That will clean your bad sectors away and your drive will be operational. Then fdisk, format, install the OS and crunch like a mad. ;) :)

What Def said. back that sucker up quick!!!!

Loud clicking noises on hard drive access aren't a good thing, Disk Write Error is even worse. :(

Yep sounds like either your drive is dying or you got hacked by ET's evil twin. I hope you are able to back up all your critical files.

I'm back and running and things seem to be ok.
I backed up my photo album onto a CD.

I'm not convinced the clicking sound was the hard drive.
It sounded like a modem speaker type of sound(when it clicks to pick up the phone).
unfortunately it didnt make the sound again after I popped the hood open

Is there any kind of diagnostics I can do on my drives?
other than the surface scan (which has been inconsistant).

ANy other types of tests I could run on my PC before I announce that ET has gone home?

Check to see if the company that made the hard drive has a website. They may have some diagnostic utilities.

Norton Utilities comes to mind.

Go to Maxtor's website and look for the diagnostic program for your harddrive model. If it report any problem, I suggest you give Maxtor a call and get their NO Quible Replacement Program.
