Navy SEALs Earn About $54,000 a Year, Even for Finding Osama Bin Laden

What did the Navy SEALs who cornered Osama bin Laden get for pulling off such a risky mission? Their weekly paychecks.

The estimated maximum salary for a Navy SEAL -- with over a dozen years of experience and an E-7 pay grade -- is about $54,000, according to an estimate based on data from the Department of Defense.

"Each of these operations is different, but we get the same amount of pay, so it's fair," said John Scorza, MC2, under the Naval Special Warfare Command.

That salary level is comparable to the average annual salary for teachers in the U.S., which was $55,350 for the 2009-2010 school year, according to the Digest of Education Statistics.

"Also note that military personnel may have more extensive benefits and on-base housing," said Lori Taylor, a professor at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. "But they work year 'round while teachers get 2 to 3 months off in the summer."

Though Navy SEALs are usually more experienced service members, the typical graduate of SEAL qualification training is 19 to 23 years old, said Lt. Cmdr. Fred Kuebler of U.S. Special Operations Command in Tampa, Fla.

A bit confusing as 54k is the maximum salary. I assume the Bin Laden heroes got less.
There's more at the link about what kind of benefits they get, etc.

Interesting. I really had no idea what a Seal makes.

That is bullshit when these worthless turds(senators ect) get paid much more, and other useless government workers.

im sure they don't have to pay for a lot of shit when doing missions ... food, housing, clothing, etc.

but still ... $54k does seem low as shit.

$54k is the estimated max. Not the average. Normally I'd say if you're in the armed forces for the money, you're in the armed forces for the wrong reason, but with the economy the way it is, I know a couple people who joined because they couldn't find jobs.

This is base salary, they don't mention hazard pay and all the other shit that bumps you up. also They don't mention the almost literally zero living expenses.

We need to get rid of the collective bargaining rights....

Oh wait, I mean, we need to pay them extra for killing some guy.

Am I the only one not impressed with this whole Osama thing?

On a side note, it IS somewhat BS considering I would rather the country build one less tomahawk missile/year and re-allocate those savings into training more elite forces and giving them a higher salary.

They also don't mention the many and varied ways you can die or be disabled.

Yes, because you have no idea what you are talking about.

Same thing anyone else in the US Military Makes..
+ hazardous duty pay.. which is like 100 extra bucks.

this is not news..
pay scales are set just because you pick a different MOS does not mean you get any more or less than anyone else..
the only difference is some incentive pay.. and what they call SRB.. which is a selective reenlistment bonus which SEALS and Nukes (nuke reactor techs) and other jobs that are either expensive to replace or valuable to the Military to keep..get which can be fairly large to entice them to stay in at reenlistment.

All Military personel have free medical free dental.. free food and boarding.. and basically have no bills unless you get married.. or live off base.. then you get an allowance (BHA/VHA) to in order to do that. which is still fairly small.

This is not news..

so the SEAL Six are more elite than the SEAL?

yes 6 isnt even a real unit name.. its a best of the best unit like Delta for the Army.

But still does not come with anymore or less pay than any other same rank.
except for incentive pays.

What they need to do is every paycheck, they need to pick a random famous athlete and switch their paycheck with a Navy SEALs. No athlete should be paid millions for playing a sport they enjoy while there are more important people out there who are risking their lives for this country.

A lot of these guys go into private security as people already stated and I'm sure also make their way into the CIA, and other agencies that will pay them a lot more.
