Here's what I wouldn't run a system without. This doesn't include core packages.

Mozilla: Browser
Mutt: Mail program
Jed: Text editor
Cdrecord: CD/DVD recorder
mkhybrid: ISO creator
GIMP: Image editor
Electric Eyes: Image viewer
XMMS: MP3 player
Sinek: Video viewer
cdda2wav: CD ripper
LAME: MP3 Encoder
WINE: Not a Windows Emulator ;)
nmap: Views open ports
dhcpcd: DHCP Daemon
tin: Newsgroup reader

That's all I can think of now. It's past my bedtime. Most of those should be on the CD, excepting Mozilla, XMMS, Sinek, and LAME.

You won't have to "download before hand", they're included on the distribution disks. Unless you want a newer version then what's included.

Nice list, but how could it be past your bedtime at 6:54 AM :Q

(And, ummm, where are all of the games on that list, there's no way that I could ever live without bzflag :))

Some people work night shifts. Some people just stay up early. :p

I work knights guarding the castle... ;)

Ok, I just woke up this time. I should really read your thread in the middle of the day at around 11pm or so.

I don't play games in Linux, so I can't really recommend any.

hmmmmm nmap, vi, BitchX, eggdrop, oidentd, postgres, apache are some things I use all the time ... most of them are included binaries with Mandrake ... though I did want to compile the eggdrop on my own as to use stats.mod .... details

Not sure I'd include vi or grep though, since they're on everything by default.

BTW BurnItDwn, you should give irssi a try, it's really miles ahead of bx.

Oh O.K., gotcha :p

I would make a list of all of the "essentials" that I use, nut that would take me a very long time :/

Yep mandrake linux should include pretty much everything you'll ever need. Anything after that you can download and install, but I'd wait until after you get all settled in. Installing software in Linux is realy different then installing software in microsoft.

But as far as essentail software? for the absolute minimum i'd install:
bash,
lynx,
gcc and associated developement tools (for installing more software)
vi,
ssh and server,
ftp and server
latest 2.4 Linux kernel and all other such gobbily-beloved patriot need to run the OS and connect to the internet.

For comfort I'd get:
X windows/fluxbox or blackbox
mozilla,
open office,
quake3/quake3 team arena/quake3 urban terror,
a tetris game
and a break out game,
and xawtv for watching tv,
alsa drivers and alsaplayer for music and sound,
Xine or Mplayer for my multimedia needs.

That'd would probably cover most of the stuff I use commonly

Then I would have on the side the hundreds of programs I'll play around with and install and uninstall based on whims and what ever project I am working on at the time.

You should just configure your urpmi to install from sources online, that way Mandrake will do all the installing for you.
