What fighting games are considered essential?

Thinking of doing a mame box with a PC good enough to run SFIV. I want to have all the old classic fighters on it that would be considered essential. I'm asking here since the PC section doesn't seem to have as much feedback in regards to fighters as the console forum. It's also console related as I may hook the PS3 up to this and use it for SF2 Turbo HD remix and a couple other downloads I pulled off PSN. How is Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition? It's on sale for around $20 or less now for 360/PS3. Is it worth getting or is it still a pretty poor fighter? I'll have the old MK games, but wonder if I shouldn't add the new one too. I've never played it so I'd appreciate any feedback you have, positive or negative.

So far I've compiled a short list of games I will definitely have. What's missing that I should include?
Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior
Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix
Street Fighter III: Third Strike
Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition (Ultra SFIV when available)
King of Fighters XIII
Skullgirls
Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3
Street Fighter x Tekken (yeah a pretty bad game but I own it so it's on the list)
Fatal Fury
Mortal Kombat 1, 2, UMK3
Samurai Showdown

note: I don't have tekken or any virtua fighter style titles. Do you think those would be considered essential for this list?

Killer Instinct
Eternal Champions

Also I was big into Tekken back in the day, with 3 being my favorite.

Eternal Champions...this is an arcade game? I remember it on...I wanna say Sega Genesis. Killer Instinct...yeah I could add that too. Don't know why I didn't think of it and put it on the list. Especially when the new one for XB1 is coming. As for tekken, I haven't played the new ones. I honestly have pretty much been stuck to Street Fighter for a few years. Are they good? Specifically Tekken Tag 2.

i'm not really sure what you are asking as games being "essential". are you just referring to good games that aren't on your list? or just fighters in general that people played back in the day? only games you can find on mame or pc?

Good fighting games that aren't just junk like Time Killers. Games that have something to them that make them fun and competitive (not necessarily technical). I guess by essential I meant for a fan of fighting games, what would they have in their collection that was notable.

Pretty much anything that can be had on PS3 and mame since that's what my arcade stick(s) works on (I don't own an xbox 360 any longer).

Have you played the newer MK (I think it came out last year)? Is it worth $20 or is it bad enough that I should just skip it.

the newer mk was great to some people and a lot of people are still playing it. i personally was not a big fan of it after playing it for a while. it was fun for a bit. i am also not personally a fan of injustice but a lot of people are playing it too.

i'd definitely put some of the older tekkens in there. i think it peaked at tekken 3 or tekken tag personally.

i'd also personally take fatal fury off of there.

the latest KOF people really liking still as well.

and many people also love cvs2.

I'll have to try to find a way to play MK cause I didn't like injustice.

Thanks for the other suggestions.

It was on Genesis / Sega CD. I figured if you were putting Mame on the PC you could handle some other emulators as well. I wouldn't limit yourself to just the arcade fighting games, the consoles had a few good ones as well.

If your PS3 has backwards compatibility (AKA the release day PHAT 60gb, maybe another) then you could run Tekken 3 / Tag off that.

Tekken is the best fighting game ever made, and the only one you own is the worst one ever made.

You can get Tekken Revolution for free on PSN, just to try it out. But definitely invest in the latest, probably Tekken Tag 2.

Uh...no...sorry. Street Fighter 4 is not worst...not even bottom 100. Also I own SSF2T:HD Remix, SF3: 3rd strike online, Alpha 1-3 on PS1 (play on PS3), MK trilogy on PS3 (bad purchase...it's got some problems and isn't true to the arcade)

Now I can ignore everything you said. Especially given your comments in the other thread I can tell you just don't like the same games.

I didn't say street fighter 4 was the worst, I was referring to Street Fighter X Tekken, that game was awful. It was awful though because it was a Street Fighter game, and if you honestly think SF4 can compete with even old Tekken games then you really need to play Tekken. Go download Tekken Revolution from PSN and play online.

I have played tekken back in the day and found it a little boring after a while. I preferred virtua fighter and soul caliber but always liked street fighter above them all. For its history I will include it on my list. You are right sf x tekken is terrible but it is not the only title I own.

I think I have a pretty good list going now. Added a few things I didn't think of.

MVC2 and CVS 2 are essentials in my book. Capcom vs SNK 2 was just released on PSN, so it should be easy to pick up. It is not your traditional VS game.

Mvc2 better than 3? I played a lot of 3 when it came out, but never got good at it. Got beat down a lot lol.

I will checkout capcom v snk2 as well.

Personally, for me MvC2 was better, but I also played it for 10 years and associate a lot of that with arcades. It didn't have a gimmicky comeback mechanic, but it was more unbalanced than MvC3. It also had guard breaks and Cable. =)

Your list is all the SF games and then the newest entries from some other franchises?

Super Smash Bros Melee
KOF98
Garou Mark of the Wolves
Last Blade 2
Buriki One

Yeah pretty much except for mortal kombat. Like I said I have been on a street fighter kick for a few years and haven't really tried much else. I knew there were games I should add to my collection for this project that I didn't think of immediately. That's why I asked.

Right now I am compiling a list and will go one by one and determine what the best release of that title was. For example with mk1 and mk2 there were no arcade perfect ports to home systems. Even the trilogy release on ps3 and 360 was adjusted some. However for street fighter 3 third strike the release on xbla and psn had some upgrades to the sprites and of course there is the HD remix of super street fighter 2.

I'd definitely recommend Guilty Gear, Persona 4 Arena, and Melty Blood if you like anime fighters. The BlazBlue title's aren't terrible either, but they keep releasing new versions that is killing the community.

Buriki one should be the top of everyone's list.
