essentail packages for gentoo?

I just installed gentoo again since the last time i killed it(
rolleye.gif
)

I was interested to see what programs I am missing out on.

Thanks

so far I have:

-Mozilla
-Gimp
-Gnome(obviously
rolleye.gif
)
-Alsa sound drivers
-XMMS somehow came on there too:Q

Depends on what you want to do.
I've got gFTP, Xchat, OpenOffice (BIG compile time), K3B, Kdevelop, Evolution, xmms.

tac -command line aim clone
irssi -command line IRC client
screen -virtual screens (virtual screens through ssh so I can run many things and detatch my session and come back where I left off later)
lsof -can show which files processes are using
tcl -scripting language (required by tac)
wget -downloads webpages and whatnot

Those are the ones I find necessary 🙂 (not on gentoo though)

Why is gnome obvious?

EDIT: As far as links, get them yourself. Check freshmeat.net for most of them. If you have trouble finding any, let me know and Ill find my link. freshmeat.net has plenty of software to wade through though.

gnome or KDE....I am a fan of the mice😀

I'll admit, I was messing around with it with just a command prompt and it seemed more than adaquate....I was browsinf ftps and everything...😎
I am a visual person so, and since gnome looks nicer(personal opinion) I was an obvious choice... By the way the compile took about 12hrs.

Mind describing those packages....or at least providing links? I am only familiar with wget.

Thanks

Ill explain the packages in an edit, check back in a bit 😉

I was just wondering why Gnome was obvious. I personally am not a huge fan. In fact, I spent a good half an hour trying to get RH to let me use a Window Manager (blackbox) instead of a DE (KDE/Gnome). The machine is much more responsive and I love it. But thats not what this thread is about. So whatever 🙂

Looks good. All I have is :

Mozilla / Galeon (I love galeon!)
Gimp
XMMS
aterm - mmm transparency
waimea - my new window manager of choice thanks to BingBongWongFooey
KDE - for KMail, KNode, and Kate
vim

I don't think I really use more than that.

Where's NetHack How can you have any version of unix without NetHack on it!

My gentoo box...

Phoenix because its the best =)
gAIM-cvs because its stable enough for me, and uses GTK2 😉
Not really a program, but a GTK2-menushadow patch that gives menus drops shadows.. pretty neat, and doesn't use any resources
Eterm because of cool transparency/tinting 😉
Fluxbox because I don't need no purdy Icons... but if I must show off Linux, I hop into Gnome 2.2 with the Noia Icon theme.
VMWare for those apps that don't have an equivalent in Linux, yet.
Xine for playing movies
gRip for ripping my CDs
Pan for browsing Newsgroups
gTetrinet for playing... Tetrinet 😀
And Crossover Office for Office.. yeah, I'm a sheep.

nice, eh?😀

Emacs is WAAAAY over my head

How about vim?
?

Never heard of it

vim = Vi, Improved! 😀

It's a really nice editor. If you're into the text-based editors, you should definitely check it out. I love it for coding.

Think of notepad with syntax highlighting available for every language and a few other neat features.

It is soooo sweet, simple, and streamlined.

Perfect for coding anything
