Those guys are nuts, and a lot of them are actually very good golfers. I think my longest drive was in the 320 yard range. . .downhill with the wind of course.

I once drove about 600 yards. Not kidding either. There's a road right along side the 18th and I aimed wrong... :)

That would have to be a pretty short par 5.

;)

I was picturing flying over the dogleg right and plop onto the green. Old Tiger Woods style. ;)

World record for the Long Drive tour in official competition is 539 yards. Scott Smith just set the record this year.

These guys are using illegal drivers according to PGA standards, I'm sure if the guys on the PGA had these drivers they would increase their drive averages by at least 25 - 50 yards.

With that said, I probably still wouldn't be able to hit 400 yards with one of them.

100% wrong. The clubs they use are ALL USGA legal. In fact, their standards are even tougher. Under USGA rules a club is legal until proven otherwise, that is, if a club has not been tested and found to be non-conforming it's okay. Under LDA rules all clubs must be tested and passed before being used in competition.

Nope, USGA club has a maximum length of 48". LDA is 52". The club heads have the same rules, though.

Close, but no cigar. The LDA measures clubs differently than the USGA and the LDA length of 52" equates to about 50" on the USGA scale. That's inconsequential though as the USGA 48" max length has been grandfathered in to the end of 2004. EVERY CLUB used in every LDA event in 2004 has been USGA legal. I'm not sure if the LDA will adapt for the 2005 season to maintain their policy of following USGA equipment regulations, but everything they've done in the past has been 100% legal and every record set was set with equipment that passed USGA testing and met USGA standards.

BTW, Spidey, the difference in clubhead speed is 2-3 MPH per inch. Hence a 52" club could be sung 8-12 MPH faster than a 48" stick if all else is equal. That's about a 25 yard difference. It alway fails to take into account that as clubs get longer they're harder to swing and past a certain point every golfer reaches a length where his swing speed goes down. A guy might swing 50" faster than 49", but a 51" slower than either. It's also amazingly hard to hit the ball solidly with longer shafts and while the LDA might allow 52" the average length is closer to 50". An extra 10 yards doesn't help if it's not in the grid.
