I'm suprised at how few Americans like football, especially considering how good their national team is.

I suppose it's because American kids have so many different sports to choose from. I wouldn't be surprised if it's disliked simply because it's European.

the national team is pretty good but the MLS is so horrible to watch. alot of people base their perception of soccer on MLS games, which like some other posters, i'd rather watch paint dry.

There's argument over who invented it, but the world has the English to thank for first determining the rules and distributing the sport globally. England, first nation of football.

How often do people die at soccer games? How often do people die at NBA or MLB games? Exactly.

just like the nba and the mlb, its a strict minority of extreme fans that always ruin it for the rest. and since there are exponentially more pro soccer games going on around the world, the number of incidents that happen at these matches are of course going to be greater.

and the deaths at the games, well, its probably only a matter of time till somethign happens at an NFL/MLB/NBA game with the way things are going

No, there are not exponentially more pro soccer games than all of those other sports. Basketball is closest of course.

People don't shoot flares off at basketball games. People don't go to basketball games with bags of blood and urine. People don't take machettes to basketball games. People don't die at basketball games. These occurences aren't "greater" in soccer. They're common. Meanwhile these things don't happen at all in other sports. Your argument is stupid.

yes, things like that happen off the field. sometimes, things spill over into the game (same as the nfl nba etc). for every person throwing flares or 'taking a bag of blood and urine' to the game, there are hundreds of others who respectfully enjoy the sport. for every beer tossing fan at an nba game, there are hundreds of others who sit there to enjoy the game.

i will probably never understand what it is about soccer in other countries that evokes such passion and emotion from its fans. but i wouldn't condemn the sport because of some idiot fans. hell, if anything, ESPN should show more of that stuff. isn't that what people really want to see on tv? i know i would 🙂

You moron. The same thing happens in basketball and american football. Only thing is in football (soccer), they don't add the extra points for the one scored to make it seem like they did more.

I think alot has to do with the culture of the country... in the US there is a multitude of sports to choose from because the nation has such an abundance of great sportsmen and sportswomen who are famous in their respective fields... golf, tennis, track & field, baseball, basketball, american football etc.

Since the hosting of the World Cup in 1994, the US has made leaps and bounds into the world of football I must admit. For a nation always aiming to be the best at what it does, I have to say the US national team has shown the most promise over any other team.

I live in a carribean country, football and cricket are our culture, I guess I can say the same for a country like England. In Brazil they thrive on football as you all must know.

Of course there are more incidents in these games but i'd have to say that it's the few so called fans who push things to the extreme that give the sport a bad name at times, but you can't say that such things dont happen in other sports...

As for ESPN showing too little football... i'm greatful for what I get to see so far, my only alternative is Fox Sports World and I more get highlights and EPL games there... hopefully DirecTV or satellite will save me in the future!
