ESPN.com columnist makes racist comment about Yao! Next step: petition...

I was just reading an article entitled "Here and Yao" by Charley Rosen, of ESPN.com's Page2. Now, about 80-90% of what's written in the article about Yao is positive in nature, but that's all a smokescreen. Rosen clearly wanted to take this opportunity to make known his racist feelings against Asians. Read this:
"So far Yao's taken his rookie beatings in stoic fashion. But someday somebody's really going to ring the big man's gong --then we'll see what's what." (emphasis added)
Did you see that??? If it were any other player in the league, Rosen would have written about "the big man's bell." But no, no, not for Yao. Yao is Chinese, so Rosen calls it "the big man's gong" -- an unabashed reference to the percussive instrument commonly associated with Oriental music. First Shaq's comments, and now this! What's wrong with this basketball league?!? I ask you: When can we stop mocking diversity, and begin celebrating unity?!?

Rosen's outrageous comments simply cannot go unnoticed. We must respond, lest our silence be perceived as approval. I propose that we draft a petition, calling for the following:

1. Rosen must make a sincere, public apology.
2. ESPN.com will fine Rosen $5,000, to be donated to various Anti-Hate-Crime charities.
3. ESPN.com will suspend Rosen from his columnist duties for a minimum of 2 months.
4. Rosen must undergo sensitivity training, including (but not limited to) a 2-week visit to China, where he will learn to appreciate the culture of another people.

Perhaps someone with more skill than I could draft up this official petition. I know of a really terrific site called PetitionOnline.com, which could host this important document for us.

This is a tremendous opportunity to make a difference in this country -- to reverse the moral decay in our society. Will you join me in the fight against intolerance? Or will you stand by and silently cheer for those who mock unity?

you wrote the "G" word.

now you must make a sincere, public apology, pay $5000 to every member of ATOT,
get a 2 month vacation, and undergo sensitivity training.

edit: And TheEvil1.

edit2: Looks like Mpitts figured it out on his own. ;)

i am chinese, and that is definately not offending (to me and probably most of my chinese friends). if you take offense to that statement, thats just incredible.

sure, he could have said it just because he was chinese, but its not meant in an offensive way. geez.

i understand about what shaq said, that, imo has a little more offense in it, although not enough to be worked up over.

i think this is starting to make us asians look bad, standing up for even the smallest things.

If there's anyone who needs to be shown sensitivity training it's that fat jerk SHAQ. Great baller but a complete a-hole.

Thank you. I was beginning to doubt the human race... or at least the segment represented on AT. :D

But tea has caffeine in it...:)

Anyway, I'm hearing enough about the Shaq ordeal, this Rosen thing was...cute? I dunno, the fact that you took out 5 minutes to write this thing makes me think you really don't have much else to do in life. Whatever, weekend's here, I'm going to Toronto, we'll all watch tonight's game in our respective domains and nef about it online. latez all.
