I have an 8500 also and I have no problems. Maybe you are placing the detector too low, or so high that the rear view mirror is blocking the lidar sensor.
Either way you were screwed when he shot you the first time. At least as of a couple of years ago cops will shoot your license plate first. If you are going to speed that much then you should probably invest in a lidar jammer that goes on the plates (provided it's legal in your state, radar jammers are illegal everywhere but lidar jammers vary)
That or just set the cruise to 74 in the 65mph zones. Been clocked at 74 hundreds of times and never had a cop give me a ticket for it.
