Gorby911-

Excuse me? No idea what I'm talking about? There are more web sites than RadarTest that show the Bel 980 is better than the V1. There is no need to get aggresive or stupid, sir. Please show your fellow members some respect. In my opinion the V1 sucks. For half the price of the V1 you get the Bel 980. it's a better radar, face it.

This is what www.speedzones.com has to say about the V1

QUOTE

The Valentine One still is a top detection dog for front and unequalled rear reception with its patented rear facing antenna and unique directional arrows. It lets you know where the prey is hiding.

I've used Bel and owned the Valentine 1 in the past. I now own the Passport 8500 and have been using it for about a year. I can honestly say that it's by far the best radar detector ever.

Conclusion on speedzones article: 'Any of these three are "Best In Class."' - These three being Bel 980, Passport 8500 and Valentine One.

<< look at the numbers. V1 didnt even pick up radar the bel980 did on some tests! >>

Yea on the "over the hill" test. The Bel 980 showed 1 of 9 leds, the V1 showed no response. I suppose you don't use a detector because seeing 1 led on the display means very little. I need to see a few more before I get concerned...this is from personal experience.

Let's look at the Ka band test. Bel 980 gets 9/9 at 1/2 mile, 4/9 at 1-1/2 mile. Escort 8500 gets 5/6 at 1/2 mile, 2/6 at 1-1/2 mile. V1 gets 5/8 at 1/2 mile, 2/8 at 1-1/2 mile. Now, any of those detectors will work for the driver because you will see a gradually strengthing signal. That's what I look for. If I am zooming along and my V1 beeps 1 led, then 2, then 3, then 4, etc. I know something is up. I don't need to see 8. The number of leds is not necessarily important. It's the trend over time. And since the V1 has a directional display, you know if the radar is in front or behind and whether the radar is stationary or moving. Nobody else has this important feature.

It is terribly false to call the Valentine One a very poor detector. I don't see why there is a need to discredit it.

V1 is not a bad radar. $400 is too much when you can get a better radar for $200.

Fact is the bel 980 detected a radar where the V1 didn't (in one test).

The directional arrows are great, I agree.. but it is simply a luxury. If the radar goes off, slow down- easy enough.. you don't need arrows or a bogey count.

I have the Passport 8500. I have used radar detectors for many years and this is the best I have ever used.

As a side note Ohio police are Very good at defeating radar detectors, instant on, sharp angles to the road, etc.

These things do you almost no good at all if your the only car on the road at night.

They just become ticket detectors :)

I have been looking around and it seems that the bel 980 is probably the best detector in its price range. I mean I would love to buy the V1, but its like $100 more everywhere I look. Anyway, does anyone know where I can walk in and buy a Bel980 retail in the Cleveland area??? I tried BestBuy and Circuit City, but neither carry that particular model (even though CC does have Bel's)...

Thanks...

EDIT: Ok I am an idiot.. (I am in Cleveland Ohio)... thanks again

Well, I gave up and just bought the Escort Passport 8500... It may not be as good as the V1, but it is definately in the top 3 and I could just walk into BestBuy and buy the thing right there.

Since Escort bought Bel, and it seems that Radartest.com seems to be affiliated with Bel somehow I realize their reviews are biased. I found that Speedzone.com and eopinions.com were both very helpful in making the decision.

Later..

Just out of curiosity, those of you who are claiming that RadarTest.com is an affiliate of Escort or BEL, or that there is some sort of bias in the actual testing procedures- could you state your sources of such information, other than the Valentine website or "I heard from this that these guys are this", and this source told me this and that... Pretend this is a court of law, and you actually have to present evidence- not inuendo or false rumors.

Perhaps you might want to look here for some interesting information:
