Escaping from Lotus Notes

Hi guys,

I just started at a new job, and my company uses Lotus Notes for reasons unknown to anyone with a brain. I wonder if you can help me figure out a way of never using that piece of s&%t software ever again.

There is a server that runs Exchange so we can connect with iOS devices. I tried to get the server settings and just put it in Apple Mail, but it seems like they have rules blocking non-iOS platforms from using that.

Is there any way of bypassing that restriction? And if not, do you know of any software that can check my email and send it to an IMAP account?

Why not just talk to IT? They might be able to help or they might not, but it's worth a try.

I would much prefer staff to come and talk to me before implementing some half-baked work around which could get them fired. Sending internal mail offsite to a public email server will most likely break your NDA.

Deliberately trying to circumvent company policies is just a bad way to start at a new job, just my 2 cents.

Last used Lotus Notes back in 2002, or maybe it was 2003.
We also had a bunch of in-house developed Domino applications and for business workflow it worked extremely well. Toss in Sametime, indexing capabilty and view customization it was pretty nice.
When we went to Exchange, it sucked. Sucked big time.
Overtime we got used to it because that's the tool the company says to use.

Why would a company use notes?
Tons of reasons. If they know how to leverage its capabilities.
Its not just an email client

I did talk to IT. The guy responsible for it told me I'm welcome to try. He even gave me a clue that there's a custom DNS entry for a server that has an IMAP port open, but I haven't found that yet. The only reason we still have Notes is corporate HQ politics. Everyone hates, especially IT.

He might be messing with you. Domino supports Activesync via Lotus Notes Traveler so the Apple devices can just connect directly without an Exchange server in the mix. I also am pretty sure that OWA (and the Exchange CAS) can't connect to Domino anyway so Activesync on Exchange wouldn't function anyway.

That plug-in worked great years ago but Outlook 2007 was not supported and once Domino moved to version 7.x it no longer worked. Otherwise if they don't enable IMAP or POP3 / SMTP he is basically boned.
