eSATA hot swapping not working

Well, I didn't know where to post this so I guess this is a good place. I have an Asus M4A785-M motherboard with an eSATA adapter connect to internal SATA port. OS is Windows 7 Home Premium x64. When I plug in my eSATA drive while the computer is on, Windows is not recognizing it, but if I boot the computer with the drive already plugged in, windows sees it just fine.

It's really bizarre. My laptop works just fine so I am pretty sure it's a problem with my desktop machine...any suggestions?

I changed it from IDE to AHCI and Windows is still working fine. The hot swapping seems to be working too. Thanks, I would never have figured that out myself...
