ERRRRR!!!!!!!!! KG7 Mobo Problems!!!!!

Well, this is really the first time I have ever built a computer...........I hate it......... Anyways, I bought a Abit KG7 board. It is great in all, but I have some wierd a$$ problems. First, lets get onto the ongoing memory issue. Ok, this is what is in my computer:

1.4 Ghz. T-Bird (Running at 1.47 right now.)
Abit KG7 (Bastard Board :| )
2 sticks of 256 MB Crucial PC2100 DDR Unregistered
TDK 24/10/40

Ok, well I ordred the second stick of DDR later after I built my system. I just got it Monday and stuck it in my computer. Everything worked fine, booted up, detected it fine and worked. So I start up my favorite game in the world, Counter-Strike , and I try to load a LAN game and it freezes up. It does this in Directx and OpenGL but not Software mode. So I update every single driver pertaining to video and it still doesn't work. I had no idea so I took out the stick of ram and switched them around. Still doesn't work. So I take it out. Works......but I need 512 MB to play my games. Can anyone help me??!!!

Second problem:
Ok, I can't remember when the last time I tried to burn a cd but I don't think I burned one since my upgrade. So I start up Nero and stick a CD-R in my TDK 24/10/40 drive and I start to try to do a CD to CD copy. It starts up fine, but when burning it, it doesn't have a continuous pattern. It starts burning, then pauses for a couple seconds, then start up again. It does this through the whole freaking cd. It took me 13 minutes to burn a 500 MB cd. That is rediculous for a 24x burner.......I already tried to un-install and re-install Nero too. Samething. I tried a different OS. Samething. :| .................HELP!!!!!! MY BOARD SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The stick of RAM may be bad. Try running with only the new stick, if system's unstable, return the stick.

Are you sure the disc isn't copy protected? Such can interfere with burner's error correction, and cause data to be read several times. Also make sure that DMA transfers are enabled for all your CDs and hard drives, otherwise accessing a storage device will take up to 90% of your CPU time.

I have the KG7 with the same memory as yours (2 Crucial 256mb PC2100 CAS2.5) and T-bird 1.2@1.4ghz. No problems whatsoever. You might also want to do a fresh install of windows.

Yes, I did a fresh install of Windows 2k Pro.


I already tried to run it with only the new stick and the old stick. Still the same problem.

I tried any kind of cdr I burned in the past like data cds and it did the samething.........

Did you load the VIA 4 in 1 drivers? This may be causing the issues you are having with the CD burner. Install the latest VIA 4 in 1's, with the exception of the AGP driver. You DONT want to install the VIA AGP driver. After you have those installed, install the last AMD AGP Miniport drivers, version 5.22 (for win2k only) is the latest, I think. Try that and see if your issues burning a cd go away. Here's links to both pieces of software:

http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/4in1/4in1433V.zip -- VIA 4 in 1's version 4.33. Install everything BUT the AGP drivers.

Try that new stick of ram in your machine by itself. If it still locks up, you should return the stick to Crucial for a replacement or refund. Also, make sure you do not have your ram settings set too aggresively. Try using CAS2.5 and the AUTO settings.

I already tried it by itself and it works perfectly fine. Crucial tech support told me I should flash my BIOS to an older one? Why should I do that??..........I don't think that makes any sense.......

It makes sense for troubleshooting... simply trying something that you have not tried yet.

sometimes newer BIOS' aren't an improvement at all, sometimes they cripple PC's.. lol..

Maybe an older BIOS WOULD help!!
