I am working on fixing a laptop for work (windows xp home operating system). It had a bunch of viruses on it which I cleaned out.

What happend before i cleaned it when the viruses where there was if i tryed to open add remove applications nothing would happen as well as with some other programs.

Now when i go to open it i get error Windows cannot find 'Rundll32.exe'

I beleive the virus was W32.Protoride.Worm that was in a file called msupdate.exe

Anyone know how to fix this? I tryed downloading a rundll32.exe and replace the old one in the win32 folder and this did not work

More than likely it is being referenced from your registry. You could run msconfig from the start>run line and see if there is a line under the start up tab looking for this file. You could then uncheck it and see if the error is gone.

with what you are saying redbeard wouldnt i just get that error every time on start up?

I am getting it only when trying to do certain things like open add remove applications or system information

Try using System File Checker. Get your installation CD and go to the run box and type: sfc /scannow.
