I recently formatted my harddrives. As usual, I just backed up my Mp3s on DVDs. Now that I want to copy them back to my HD, I get this error "Cannot copy U2-Beaufiul Day: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)."

What the heck does this mean? I can get some of the MP3s from the DVD, but not all. Any suggestions?

CRC error means at least part of that file is damaged / corrupted.

More technically it's a number that was generated by looking at all the data in the file when it was written, but now when the file is read back it generates a different number so parts of the file have changed.

When you wrote the DVDs did you do the verify data pass? It's always a good idea since a flaw in the disc surface might let it write but be unreadable.

Dave: Thanks for the answer.

I have a NEC 8x DVD+-R Drive and I burned the songs @ 8x although DVDRs are 4x. Could this be the reason? The DVDRs were always kept in a clean surface so I know they couldn't have been dirty when I burned them.

Thanks.

It could be that brand of disc won't write reliably at 8x, or it could just be a manufacturing defect on that / those specific disc(s) which happens even with premium brands. That's why it is always a good idea to verify your discs.

Assuming you did verify the data, then it could be disc damage that occurred after the burning (scratches, dirt, etc.). Which is why you should always have _2_ discs of anything you really care about.
