error on hard drive

there is this error on a Maxtor 40GB hard drive, i am wondering if it was possible to reuse the hard drive by reinstalling windows or something like that?

it is no longer under warrenty,
so is the only way to get this computer working again is to buy a new hard drive?
 
you need to be more specific before i can tell you.
please describe this error...what happened before, what happens now.
 
when it boots up, bios takes 5 minutes to find hard drive (normally 10 seconds) and then says there is an "error on primary hard disk" and woud'nt go further than that.

i don't really know what could have caused this problem. it is only used for the internet..
