Error in Kernal32, need some help

Well, a co-worker brought me her computer and ask if I could do anything because she doesn't have the money to bring it to bestbuy or a place like there where they charge up the wazzo. So I said bring it over, worse comes to worse I can't do anything with it, and you're out $0. OK so here's the prob...

It posts, starts to load windows but stops at the sign in. An error message pops up saying that there's an error in Kernal32 then it goes to the blue screen of death.

I can get to the BIOS, it's just it's extremely old. Can you do a clean wipe of the HD from the BIOS and if so how?

If you want to wipe the hard drive so you can reinstall Windows, then just throw in the Windows CD and begin installation from CD-ROM. During the Setup process, you can delete partitions (Win2000 and later, anyway). What OS is it running, by the way?

If they're ok with it getting nuked, then maybe consult my anti-worm tips here and also look at the Ongoing Prevention suggestions to help keep it from getting messed up again.

Win 98 is there OS now, I have 98 and Pro CDs that I can put on there. And the auto installation doesn't go.... Tried changing the boot device in the BIOS and it won't let me.

I see. Will it boot from the Win98 Setup floppy diskette? If so, you could probably get your Win98 Setup going from the CD-ROM after booting from the floppy, and you're off and running. Now when you say "Pro," do you mean Win2000 Pro or WinXP Pro? How much RAM does the rig have?

I have Win xp pro and 98 both on CDs...would be hard for me to just look around to find a floppy.

I think it was 64MB or 94MB on it.

I seem to recall reading that WinXP Pro won't even install with under 128MB of RAM, and from working with a WinXP system that had 128MB recently, I think that's a good thing Maybe hit Bootdisk.com and see if they have a bootable diskette with CD-ROM drivers on it?

Going to try that, thank god I have a Win 98 Disk at hand huh?

Oh and sorry for my ignorance, just never ran from a boot disk before. So how do I go about doing it?

Put the floppy in, as well as the CD, and then restart the computer and if it boots from the floppy, you'll see a menu and you can choose Start Windows98 Setup From CD-ROM, if I recall correctly.

Ok I made a 98 Boot disk and now I have it in safe mode. The exact error I'm getting is...

MSgrv32 in Kernal32...

I have a Win 98 Disk but misplaced the product Key although I thought it was stuck on the CD Case.

Ok so I'm finally in safe mode....what should I be looking for and where should I go from there to get this to boot in normal mode?

The first thing I'd do is to install Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3 and use their offline updater to update its database, and do an anti-spyware scan. You might want to get the free McAfee Stinger and see if it picks up any viruses/worms/trojans, although of course it's only looking for about 45 of the most common flavors, not all ~100,000 known viruses/trojans/worms.

After that, I am going from memory but I think you can go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information and then in System Information there's a Tools menu that includes the System File Checker. It does what it sounds like. Could be a help, could totally nuke the system... Good luck!

Alright, after doing that i get another blue screen of death that says...

"A fatal exception 06 has occurred at 0000 : 000056A2"

So I do a three finger salute to restart and now I"m getting the same ole error again.

And with the boot disk, before Windows boots up an error pops up reguarding the disk to remove it so I do then it boots windows up. Now I'm having probs getting into safe mode again.

Ok for Win 98, what key do you press and when to enter safe mode/get the safe mode options?

F5 key for safe mode, IIRC. Or was it F8. Mash 'em both

This computer is two stories lower then where I'm working on the other, so everytime I run from this one to the other or the other to this one, I have both dogs following me. It's actually a site to see!

Ok more funness here...

This comp is from 1996, so it doesn't have a NIC so I can't use my dsl to go DL these programs, it won't recognize the D/CD Drive in safe mode, only A/floppy and C/HD, doesn't recognize my Flash Drive and floppys aren't big enough to DL these programs to...

Peel the hard drive out, run up two flights of stairs while being chased by dogs, throw it into your computer as a slave and give it an antivirus scan in your system, maybe? Not sure if you can do an anti-spyware scan on a non-system drive using Spybot S&D but there's nothing to lose by trying.

Also, while it's in your system you can put whatever you want onto its hard drive. Maybe the free ZoneAlarm installer, Grisoft AVG Free Edition antivirus installer, and McAfee Stinger? Stinger is small enough to fit on floppy, by the way.
