Error in Anand's 875 review?

The 875 review said that ICH5 peformance suffers from lack of drivers, but according to one other review(I read about 10 and don't recall which one) there will be no more ATA drivers for the ICH5 unless you're using RAID. This seems to be confirmed by Intel here. This would really suck, I like the boost the IAA gives in things like database compacting but the newest non RAID version (2.3, 5 months old)has some problems and there's no mention of whether it would work on the ICH5 anyway.

That's not an error, there aren't any ICH5 IAA drivers currently available but there will be. Anand's two reviews as well as our upcoming retail 875P reviews do not use an IAA driver because the ICH5 IAA is still under development (unfortunately) and IAA 2.3 drivers do not work with ICH5 motherboards (we tested this extensively).

EDIT: Perhaps you're right, now that I look at that Intel page. I'll have to ask them about this.

Thanks. If it's true, and it appears it is as of now, I'd be pretty disappointed. Intel is catering to the marketing hype of RAID 0.

What's to complain about? What you should clarify is that there will be no specialized non-RAID driver from Intel. Or is that non-non-RAID as RAID 0 is not redundant but negatively redundant. Anyhoo, guess what? Intel isn't very good at software anyway. Their IAA was mostly for marketing purposes to claim tidgy perforance benefits over the competition and I guess it will continue as such if they are actually going to tout RAID 0 as a benefit for average desktop use.

As I said, IAA did make things I do frequently go faster on my machine. That is why I'm a little annoyed.

I agree. I like IAA. Boots faster, big games levels load faster. Win2K without IAA will only run ATA66. With IAA, ATA100.

I agree also, IAA has made my computing experience significantly more enjoyable.

OMG that sounds a little too much like a soap commercial. ;)

Anyhooo, can it be proven that this new chipset could perform significantly better with IAA development? Don't you think if it was so that Intel would continue? Or are you complaining about the halt in development for older chips? And if so why, if it was so great then it didn't need "improving"? My experience is that they never were able to resolve all the hibernation problems.

I think that if Intel has decided not to make it available for non Raid users, and made it final, they will have reasons. I'm sure Intel isn't going to do something to improve performance if they can. This is, unless, they are trying to get more people to switch to Raid 0 but I don't see why they would want to push that. If there aren't drivers, I'm sure they will atleast make some change to the bios or something to improve performance a little.

I already know what benefits the IAA brings to my machine, and they would bring the same to an ICH5 board. That's just how caching works. And Suspend to RAM kicks hibernate's ass.
