Error code: 0x80070002

Hi guys,

Have you ever run across this error:

"A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error code: 0x80070002."

I get it just after inputing my XP pro password. After this sometimes the pc logs in but most programs don't work at all, my docs folder shows up empty, etc.

the article here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310794

doesn't really apply to my situation as those keys are not present in my registry and my system drive letter hasn't changed.
However, there's a chance that one of the last things I did before having the problem was increase the amount of my virtual drives from 2 to 4, but never changed c: to something else. In any case I undid that and the problem persists.
I'm worried it could be a hard drive problem as I was able to fix the error once by running a chkdsk /r from recovery console. Evidently it came back and chkdsk is not fixing it anymore, even though it does tell me it found one or more errors.
Safemode doesn't work, it happens on all the user accounts.

I really want to fix this problem even though I don't need to. I have everything backed up and my bigger files are on a diff. partition, so I could just reformat c: which contains only the OS. But it's kind of a challenge. I won't reformat until I get really bored of trying to come up with an actual fix. The other thing is that if it's a HW problem it'll come back after reformatting, and that really sucks.
Thanks!

I'm having this problem also, like you my safe mode won't work either. I'm goin to try the Repair chkdsk /r from recovery console but I doubt it'll fix it, with my luck 🙂

Is there any way to edit the registry without bein in Windows or Safe mode? My drive letter has changed and this could be a simple fix if I can

Nevermind on that last question, appears there isn't

Corky-g, yeah, I've been wondering that myself. I did run the dos .exe for AVG antivirus (up to date at that point) the very same day it happened and it didn't find anything, but I know it's still possible.

RKYeager, to my knowledge there isn't a way to change that letter. But at least you know what happened. The other reason that's kept me from re-installing is that I don't know what triggered this, so I have a feeling it'll happen again.

The weird part is that after I wrote my initial post I came home to find my computer booting up properly. I did fool around a lot in recovery console last night, and I'm not sure if it's something I did or if the problem just happens randomly. Of course I'm not shutting it down now as I'd still like to find a solution. One thing to mention is that it did hibernate and them came back with no problems. Right now I'm moving everything to the storage partition in order to reduce to a minimum the usage of the optical media backups.
Also, I just updated AVG/adaware/spybot and I didn't find any problems...

This installation dates back to jan the 12th, 2004. Up until now, it had been 100% stable. I think that ~3 bootups before having the problem I did notice an extended delay between the time I inputed my password and the time windows fully loaded everything, around 12 secs, and it used to be like 3 seconds before. In those 12 seconds I'd get like 5 secs of HD activity, then a pause and then ~2 more secs of hd activity and then everything would have loaded 'properly'.

Do you guys know what is the reason to obtain the 'one or more errors were found and fixed' message when doing a chkdsk /r? I guess it's kinda common but I've received that error with all 3 partitions of my single hard drive.
I'm going to look for the Western Digital diag thing. I'll see if it finds anything wrong with the HD.

Thanks guys!

You can edit the registry remotely if you can reach the login prompt. Once at the login screen, do not try to log in, but instead go to another machine, open up regedit, and connect to your problem machine.

This will not work if you have previously disabled the remote registry service.
