Error Booting - Stuck on MUP.sys

MAME

Banned
HP Laptop ~ 1 year old
XP SP2

Freezes on bootup. When booting in safe mode it freezes on MUP.sys (located in system32/drivers). Google found some people with the same issue, but no resolution.

They've tried booting off the XP recovery disk, and while it loaded files in an attempt to fix the problem, the same issue remains.

I checked my computer and didn't find MUY.sys.

Thoughts?

I think your registry has been corrupted. There is no such file in XP or XP pro. There is a mup.sys, but no muy.sys.

I think some thing placed a command or reference in the registry that cannot be executed, hence it just stops at that point.

Try RegEdit, and FIND muy.sys. If it finds it, delete the entry. You probably piucked it up on something like MySpace.

It's usually not related to mup.sys itself, it's just that mup.sys is the last driver listed in the log. I don't know what could be causing it to freeze, though. Does 'last known good config' work? When did the problem start happening and what has changed since then (to your knowledge)?

it's MUP.sys

no boot option will work. They said nothing changed, just happened this morning

I have multiple (3) drives in my main rig. One of them got disconnected (power or SATA cable) and it was hanging after MUP.sys when I tried to launch in Safe Mode. Just a shot but I'd say check all of your connections and reseat everything just in case.

it's a laptop...

This might help you:

MUP.SYS

This is a very common problem and there is a lot of discussion available. Google MUP.SYS Hang.

it's not hanging ON mup.sys, but right AFTER mup.sys (leave it to MS to have logging be worthless, and not show you WHAT is loading, but only what HAS loaded)

last time I saw this issue, I ended up reloading MCE on my computer

Doing a manual recopy from installation source might help... could be the result of corruption I suppose.

I had this happen in 2K3 server. Had to boot to recovery console and delete a file or two.. I'll see if I saved the info and post back later.. You DON"T have t reinstall.
