Erratic Performance Problems In BF2

I have a computer with:
-Leadtek nVidia 6800 GT (416/1130)
-2.8 ghz Pentium 4
-Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value
-Western Digital Caviar 80 Gb
-1 Gb of some sort of generic RAM

I have been having problems with BF 2 ever since I bought the 6800 GT. The computer is running on a clean install of Win XP Home. The demo had been having the same problems. The framerate is usually very stable (75-100 fps) when I am not in combat, in vehicles, or generallly around other players. In these situations the framerate sticks around 20-35. In combat, where you need good performance most, the rates are so low it's basically unplayable. I don't have any other problems, no crashes or anything like that, just this strange issue. I can get good framerates, in non-combat situations, with High settings with 4x AA and 1280 x 960 at 60hz. I was able to help my performance by manually disabling V-Sync ( it seems to be on by default), but not to a large extent in combat. Has anybody else had these problems? Or, does anybody has a remedy for them?

aa, shadows, d lighting are bad for you. 2 gig ram solves a lot of probs in this game. /over

I have already tried turning down dynamic lighting and shadows (to medium, I will try lower) and AA to none.

Basically same setup here (P4 3.8, soundblaster live 24) ,I played with the setting for a while then decided to go with 2xAA, shadows OFF (they didn't work right in the first place for me, go figure), lighting low, sound low(you do have better sound card). Every thing else is medium. Got tired of trying other setups and just went and played like this. Still looks great and fps are never too low. I can't believe its my hardware (won't be upgrading to 2G of ram for this buggy game). If my 6800 GT can't handle this game, shame on EA.

Edit: played with it some more and was able to turn most on high 4xAA, shadows off, lighting low, sound low, (after upgrading to 1.5Gb ram, but don't know if that had anything to do with it. )

I do have another pc with Leadtek 6600 GT and only 512 Mb ram, 3.0 P4. Resolution at 800x600, most is set to low, no AA, no shadows. Some medium detail etc.... I do sacrifice some visuals but I can't have fps droping below 60fps. I do set this way for a full 64 player server. On smaller servers I may be able to increase the "pretty" but I won't bother. Its nice even on these settings.
