Erik Schmidt says Google Tablet next year.

Unless they alternate manufacturers like they do with their Nexus phones, I think that an official Google tablet is just going to annoy the third party manufacturers. That said, it could also be a good opportunity for Google to get new hardware features onto devices or to try out different things without requiring a lot of third party commitment.

Don't see the point? Because Google owns Motorola Mobility now and they want that division to turn a profit maybe?

It's not Android, it's just that Apple was first to market with a product that worked fairly well and had a massive number of apps in a very short time.

Maybe they'll think of ways to use technology in ways that people hadn't thought of before..

or maybe they'll make the 2nd best tablet of 2011.

In 2012.

That's funny.

Google never said that. They said they'd be releasing a top-end tablet in 6 months next year.
Google never said they'd be releasing a Nexus tablet. They also never said it would be entirely Google branded.

Actually, it sounds like any generic CEO/Chairman quote out there, when it comes to the IT world.
It's likely the Xoom 2 with a Cortex A15 SoC (Xyboard 2? In no way do I consider the Xyboard to be a Xoom 2, and will laugh in the face of those who state such). The acquisition should be happening soon, the timeline kind of matches up with A15 SoCs flooding the market, Motorola will obviously want to release another top-end tablet, and Google will probably have a new tablet-oriented pitch/patch/fork (4.2?) ready for release.

WHY?

Even if it's a new OS, there are just so damn many tablets out there, and the only one really catching on is still the iPad. Galaxy at $500 is crazy when a Kindle Fire is just $200, and you can whore an Apple for a relatively small premium.

By the way, how's that cloud-only Google mini-computer thing going?

Google should just focuses on the few things that they do well instead of putting their hands on everything. How's Buzz and Google+ doing btw?

While all of that is true, a better question would be why are they even announcing this now? If it's still at least six months out it's not even ready to show off. It doesn't do them any good and at worst kills sales for the current line of Android tablets. Who the hell wants whatever's out now when they're going to release a "top-end" Android tablet in half a year?

Schmidt needs to learn to keep his mouth shut. It seems like every time he opens it he ends up saying something stupid.

Amen. I doubt we need yet another Android tablet, but it would be nice to have an affordable alternate to Apple's overpriced product that works as well. I like what I read about Samsung's Galaxy 10.1", but $500 for a device that I would likely never take out of the house? I can get a 15" HP or Lenovo laptop for less than that.

We do need a new tablet.

Personally, I want one with a TI OMAP5 SoC (multicore Cortex A15, more powerful GPU, think SGX544MP2/MP4 - also DirectX 10.1 compatible).
An Android ICS experience on such a chip would be glorious.
And also, with an unlocked bootloader, probably able to boot Windows 8 once released. 😀
I'd love to dual-boot with Android and Win8.

Personally though, I might have to wait for new GPUs. The current top-end PowerVR SGX models are great and all, but the spec they are claiming for the 6-series is terrific. Hopefully some companies include it in SOCs available around Summer.

To find what exactly? Android 3.0 and 4.0 were both designed with tablets in mine and their UI shows that.

Android tablets have been slow in coming, but not because the OS was bad.
then why are they slow in coming? Please tell me this one. When you look around there are far more cell phone enthusiasts and active smartphone users sporting iPhones compared to Androids. The large Android marketshare is there because a bunch of people who don't care about phones jumped onto cheap or free Android phones. But amongst gadget-centric people, I see far more iPhones.

Now when you look out for tablets and look for users who actively bring them around to coffee shops or even use them a lot at home, I see iPads. I know of 2 people who use Android tablets, and another 3 of my friends who have Touchpads but only cuz they're $99.

Honestly, it's the OS. If Android tablets were that great, we'd see them everywhere. Even if 3.0 was designed with tablet use in mind, it was a quickly hashed together job that was far from complete and far from being able to compete with the iPad let alone the iPad 2.

You can only hope that 4.0 will bring enough tablet optimizations to be truly useful.

And that's exactly why Android adoption has been lacking.

It's either you buy into Apple's pitch and get the iPad, or you just get a decent laptop for the same amount.

Use the search function.

Don't tell me to use the damn search function. I've spent more time on these forums than you have spent thinking up logical arguments.

Your argument is shit, and remains to be shit. You posted a troll post, and I asked you to back up those claims, and you posted more shit.

No surprises.

When Google developed Android, it was never meant for tablet use. The first round of Android tablets weren't supported by Google and couldn't even access the Marketplace.

Now may be the time where Google is serious about tablets, but it should be noted that they are shoehorning their OS into the tablet space. Google will make a nice tablet eventually, but it is slow in coming.

To be fair, it wasn't too much of a problem to side load the Android Marketplace and download apps. The issue revolved around certification, which is why those tablets didn't include the Google apps either, even though they were fully capable of running them.

Google just said that they wouldn't associate their brand with those tablets. Also, I believe the first Galaxy Tab had Google's apps and the Marketplace on the device, so it's not as though everything was completely eschewed.
