Get 3 black & 3color cartridges for most Epson printers. It comes in a Red stocking for Christmas,(cute). You can find this at www.ink4art.com . I have seen this company advertise all over the place. I saw them in my newspaper today. Sound like a deal to me.

That voids your warranty. Yes, we all hate the high price of Ink, but sometimes you get what you pay for. I have nothing against ink4arts.com, they are a fine company with a good reputation but understand that these are generic and could clog your printer nozzles.

non-OEM ink is not necessarily bad--some are as good or superior (& some junk)--what is the quality of their inks?

I just purchased some ink cartriges from extracartridges.com I am very pleased with the service. The cost was $42 for 4 color and 4 black cartriges, I ordered the China - ISO 9001 Certified cartridges. I have used these before with no problems and high print quality. Also shipping was very fast, something like 4 days after the order. Excellent place overall.

Non OEM cartridge usually have problems in one or more of these things....

color durability....generic inks are more likely to fade over time
clogging of heads
corrosion of heads...generic inks lack lubrication and corrosion inhibitors
warranty...non OEM cartridges usually void warranty...even if the drive motor fails....
color balance...usually the color tones are off a bit....

All of the above I have either seen with my own eyes, or read decent reviews....you get what you pay for....

Well good, thats what this thread needs, personal testimonials about generic ink. Everyone is looking to save money, or they wouldn't be here. Good job.

I wouldn't worry about problems with generic cartridges. Most printers are only a few $$ anyways. I've paid less than $50 for each of my Epson printers. I'm not about to pay $20 or $30 for original manufacturer cartridges.

As far as ink fading, this is a problem in general with ink jet printers. Because of this, you should not print long-term items (wills, etc.) with ink jet printers. For these purposes, you should utilize a laser printer.

Question for Souka:

Were you able to attribute the failures/malfunctions to generic ink?

I bought several cartridges for my two Epson printers (660 and 740) from L&M. I have not used any yet. Did anyone have any problem with Epson/generic combination?

I agree with the person who said it's a matter of economics. My laser jet printers are about 60 or 70 dollars. Each generic cartridge saves $15 easy. So if my printers last 4 generic cartridges, I am coming out even. If they last longer, I am saving money.

I have been using generics from inkcarts.com on my Epson 660 for the last 6 months, no problems at all so far. About $6 for black, $13 for color.

I had my Epson clog with generic Ink. Luckily, it was still under warranty. I was informed it would cost $150 to pay for the fix ( of course, throw the printer out).
If you want to use generic ink, buy an HP which has the print heads as part of the ink cartridge. The problem with the Epson is you cannot easily change a clogged print head.

Then again, a new printer is cheap, and maybe its time to change anyway, and maybe the ink won't clog the head. I wouldn't use generic ink unless I was willing to part with my Epson.

zarfus:

Would you give us the brand of the generic ink that you used? so that we can avoid it? You did not seem to be upset about the problem caused by generic ink. Is it because the printer was old? Did the clogging occur right after you started using generic?

The reason I am asking is my Epson 660 and 740 are new (I still have the original ink cartridge). I do not want to damage the printer head before running 4 generic ink cartridges.

Thanks.

Just for your information, the last I heard it was illegal for manufacturers to void warranties because generic ink was used.

I would assume tho, that the ink manufacture would have to guarantee the quality of the generic ink, that it was equivalent or better than the name brand manufacturers.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe they CAN void your warranty IF they can prove the generic ink caused the problem (which seems like it would be a bit tough for them to do).

I have used 6 generic cartridges, all bought on Fleabay for less
than $5.00 each, on the Canon BJ4200 hooked up to the kids computer.
Kids go thorugh ink cartridges like water, and I was willing to risk
the printer to save on ink. No problems at all so far.

I bought some generics for my Epson 740. No problems so far,
but still on the 1st cartriges.

Check out Fleabay, there are lots of guys selling generic cartridges
for less than $5.00. Look at their feedback. If it was ruining
printers, you can bet they'd get some bad feedback. You can normmally
only get generics for cartridges that don't have built-in heads.
The heads are too hard to manufacture and the cartridges are big $.
That's why I got rid of the old Lexmark, and got the kids the Canon
for $20 at a garage sale.

I have been using an Ink refill kit for my Epson Stylus Color 760 for 2 refills so far...pretty nice, enough for 15 or so refills(Color and Black) for only $50! Not messy at all either, they supplied me w/ 2 syringes and 4 bottles of ink..great instructions too...the epson cartridges are SOoooo easy to fill too! :):Q

Here is a company explaining how you can you can use aftermarket cartridges.

they and many others cite the Magnusson_Moss Warranty act

a manufacturer may not require the use of any brand of ink (or any other article) unless the manufacturer provides the item free of charge under the terms of the warranty

understanding Moss Magnusson Warranty act

for those too lazy to read this the quote from the FTC's web site

""""Tie-In Sales" Provisions
Generally, tie-in sales provisions are not allowed. Such a provision would require a purchaser of the warranted product to buy an item or service from a particular company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive a remedy under the warranty. The following are examples of prohibited tie-in sales provisions.

In order to keep your new Plenum Brand Vacuum Cleaner warranty in effect, you must use genuine Plenum Brand Filter Bags. Failure to have scheduled maintenance performed, at your expense, by the Great American Maintenance Company, Inc., voids this warranty.

While you cannot use a tie-in sales provision, your warranty need not cover use of replacement parts, repairs, or maintenance that is inappropriate for your product. The following is an example of a permissible provision that excludes coverage of such things.""""
