EPSON 580 installation problem

authenticate

Senior member
Just bought an Epson 580 inkjet colour USB printer but am having problems getting it to work. I have Windows 98 and have followed the installation instructions to the letter but the last stage gives me an Epson error box saying that there is a communication error with the printer. However, the test page does come out.
I can then print a page from MS Word but nothing else afterwards. A reboot is necessary as the machine starts to hang. The printer is the only USB device connected. There is only one IDE hard disk and one IDE CD-ROM - no SCSI. After the reboot the situation is worse with a yellow exclamation mark beside the USB driver under device manager. I have deleted it and rebooted so that Windows 98 re-installs it and the whole process repeats itself - i.e. print one document then hang then reboot etc.
Any ideas anyone?

did you install the usb drivers?
this is done automatically when you install the printer software, something which you should do first before connecting & turning on the printer!

authenticate,

If you will pm your e-mail address, I will attempt to send you a file which will bail you out if you follow the "read me" directions!

Took the printer to Epson who checked it and the usb cable out to be OK. They suggested that maybe the usb controller on my computer is not compatible with the epson usb printer driver.
Has anyone heard of this problem as this sounds like a never-ending story?

bacillus,
I found the referenced web link yesterday after epson suggested that I look at microsoft's support web-site. My m/b does use a VIA chipset. I downloaded and applied the English support file from microsoft but this has not helped (not sure if it was supposed to).
The situation is the same - I still can't use my new printer - help!

authenticate, have you double checked that usb is enabled & assigned an irq in bios? check under system tools/sys information/hardware/irqs as well to make certain usb is indeed using an irq!
are you using the latest via driver pack??

bacillus,

I have contacted matsonic the m/b manufacturer for advice on an update to the via chipset but have not yet received a reply.
I have found from the microsoft knowledge base that windows 98 se has a timing problem with usb printers connected to VIA usb controller chips.
I am thinking of upgrading to ME.
