Epoxy

Epoxy is amazing stuff.

Been using it for years and I get a smile every time I mix the resin and hardener together.

I had a mirror mount on a light box get out of whack and had to move it so epoxy to the rescue. Good as new!

Anyone else use epoxy frequently? What brand do you prefer? (They're all about the same.)

I use the stuff made by the makers of super glue if I want it to be clear.
I use JB Weld for automotive repairs.

We use Belzona exclusively. It's supposed to be the best.

Fast curing products tend to smell fishy.
Products with longer worktime tend to smell sweet like cocktail sauce.

So if you smell fish and cocktail sauce and it's not dinner someone has goofed up your repair. :laugh:

We've got this stuff at work that we use to bond the heads of 10 lb. pin hammers to their Fiberglas handles. I might have accidental brought some home for personal use. 24 hr. set time, but you'll never get them apart. It comes in two plain baby food jars.


I miss a product they used to have 15 years ago called Mr.Mac's, it was a powder and liquid you mixed. They made a metal fix, a wood fix, and a concrete fix. It dried even harder than JBWeld. It could be filed and sanded the next day, but you could barely drill it after it set for two days. You could even use it structural. And, the shelf life was like forever.

Epoxy is great except if you are at extreme conditions, it tends to undo.

I use it when I need it.... which isn't often. I use whichever brand is reasonably cheap at the time of purchase.

It's good to know I'm not the only one with an unusual love of epoxy.
I prefer Devon epoxy, but then, it was my first.

5-minute stuff for quick repairs, or the regular formula for the best strength.
That Plastic Welder they've got is excellent for plastics, but if you don't have really good ventilation, you'll probably feel like ripping your nose off of your face. It smells absolutely horrible.

Gear lube? Yuck! Although that's not as bad as those bunker C preheaters when they smoke. Some diesel mechs actually dig it! :Q

It's nowhere near as bad as those Magnum 44 markers. Talk about a Hexane buzz. Where's that Meddle Album? :laugh: Anyone play the harmonica and have a dog? What are you waiting for?! Get that on youtube stat!

I've used various plastic welders including the Synrad 60W sealed CO2 system. PVC doesn't smell particularly good when burning. The solvents used for assembling pipe OTOH, hmmm well let's just say it may be time to take a break and get some fresh air.

The faster epoxies due have less sheer/tensile but it's still quite high and usable in most applications. Like CA if you kick it for flash cure the fillet bond strength deteriorates but again in most tack applications the strength far exceeds what is really needed and often the base material in the first place!
