Epoxy river tables

My wife literally dragged me out of an antique shop when I was in negotiation to buy a 9ft tall bronze raptor statue so I have no doubt someone buys them!

For closure I had beaten him down to £3k and a bit and, yes, I was quite drunk at the time!

Edit. Probably closer to 7 foot tbh. It was a cool statue though!

Shipping kills the deal.

I think that a big one of those would make a nice computer desk tbh!
Oddly enough, the two computer desks in my house are of the fast and cheap verity. Both are made from 8' cheap butcher block tops that I edged and finished. One is on a simple trestle made out of 2x4's and the other is sitting on a couple of Ikea cabinets. For reasons I can't explain, I've never had the desire to build a nice looking desk, and my wife has never asked for one.

Back on epoxy tables, they seem to have been done to death. I've haven't felt any desire to build one. That said, the up scale version of farmhouse style appeals to me. Heavy, painted support structure, with a thick perfectly finished top. It's a nice look. But then again, I also like brutalist architecture.

So my next pet peeve is burned furniture. Build a table, take a torch to it, slap on a couple coats of clear polly, try to sell it.
Why would anyone think that's a nice look? I've been seeing a bit more of it which really surprised me because I thought the broke hillbilly look went out 40 years ago. I've never once seen it look like anything but splotchy burned wood.

Not upscale, but I built a few of these, some with a folding side. Hey, what ya want with a table saw and some dowels.

I saw a Korean (I think) version of that that looked ok but they scorched the planed wood with a hot iron, sanded it down then treated it. It kinda looked like black walnut but with a more pronounced grain.

That's a process designed to get a particular look. I'm talking using a simple torch to blacken the surface. It's invariably splotchy and looks exactly like what it is, a cheap, fast, easy way to poorly darken the wood.

Yeah, that doesn't sound great! Wood stain exists for a reason. Wood looking like the wood it is is the best though.

Depends on the wood. If you build with all heart black walnut a simple hard wax finish is perfect. It protects the wood without changing it. White Oak works well natural or stained, I've done both with outstanding results.

I built my entry bench top out of cheap pine, screwed the finish up badly, sanded most of it off and refinished it. The thing came out beautiful for reasons I don't begin to understand. I was aiming for "not bad enough to toss out" and ended up with "wow!". Dumb luck and being to lazy to start over paid off for the first time in my life.

That's pretty meh. Some stain might improve that, but that's a rough workshop kinda cabinet, not something I'd want in my living area.
It's junk. Looks to be made out of pallets, another fad that needs die.
Someone is actually trying to sell that thing as furniture.
